its really simple:

1) unplug the battery
2) take off the screw caps (on the side of the steering wheel, behind the cruise control buttons, but its on the column)
3) disconnect and take airbag off. set it aside for now. once unplugged, the chances of it going "boom" are pretty much gone.
4) unplug the cruise controls and remove
5) u need a special torx bit to take off the steering wheel from the shaft.

i had to take off my airbag to replace the cruise control buttons, and like you i was worried about the airbag ripping my head off in the process. once you take it off, you will be surprised at how simple its setup.

EDIT:
no matter what, always take care when messing with the airbag, dont toss it around incase you ever want to use it again

no hot potato.

a little off topic, but have you guys seen that video where some idiot sits on a bucket and has someone set off an airbag thats in the bucket? he actually flew a few feet in the air from the airbag hitting him so hard, it was really funny but incredibly stupid...lol

oh wow, yeah its iffy driving it around like that. one more thing tho, i believe the repair manual instructs that you use a new bolt for the steering wheel, which makes me assume this is a TTY bolt (TTY=torque to yield, aka one-time use only). if your new steering wheel doesnt come with a new one, i would get one thru ford, just to be on the safe side.
