what happens with the tpms when you buy aftermarket wheels
just like the title says what happens to the tire pressure monitoring system when you buy an aftermarket mounted and balanced wheel and tire package? anybody? also would i be able to strap the stock tpms sensors to aftermarket wheels if i bought the wheels and tires separately?

i went thru the same choice earlier this year. TPMS is needed for that system to pass inspection. if you look at your dash, you will see a "check" light for TPMS. if that is on when you take it for inspection, my guess is it would not pass.
the tpms system on our cars is inside, strapped to the rim itself. the metal band is NOT reusuable, but the sensors are. at a minimum it would cost 50-100 bux i think i have read, maybe less to buy new straps that fit the new rims you have bought (ie if you have the 17" stock rims, and move up to 18" aftermarket, you will need 18" bands)
or, you can spend another 300-400 to buy all new sensors and bands for the aftermarket rims, and have two full sets.
i held off buying the rims for now becuase of this gayness.

Ijust purchased 4 new Konig "Trouble" rims hate to spend the extra cash for bands. What about, Hmmmmm , liquid nail to the rim itself ?????? If not I may try the pvc tube idea.

Though I did not know about the inspection aspect of this, (do not have inspection in FL) that is interesting to hear that it is now part of the inspection.
I have the TPMS on my 07 and in inquiry on new wheels would cost me 100 per wheel for this TPMS crap. For 80 years we were able to tell inflated from non inflated tires, now we need some silly thing to tell us.
Makes no sence. Guess this will last a few years (like day time running lights or front wheel drive cars) to determine just another silly cost.

IIRC, the sensors send a signal to a receiver. Nothing too fancy, but one more electronic bit to go wrong.
I believe they were mandated for the 2008 model year. Some of the other cars I looked at prior to buying the Mustang didn't have them. I was happy thinking I got an 2007 before the mandated sensors since I am going to be purchasing separate winter wheels. I was a bit disappointed to find out that my 2007 has the TPMS. For some reason I thought it was an option for the cars.
I wouldn't mind it if it was a decent system like the one on my friends Corvette. His will actually display the tire pressure in each wheel. Unfortunately Ford went with a simple Idiot light that is just about worthless.
I am guessing this tpms was not an option in 2005? If so, I would have to assume the dealer installed them on my new wheels, since I do not have any dash light scoming on. But I have replaced one wheel myself and did not replace any sensor or band. I grant, I ordered the wheel/tire from the dealer, and maybe they ordered it with the sensor/band (but I seriously doubt that).

The TPMS was not offered on the 05 or 06's and came as standard equipment on the 07's.
Actually wish I did not have them but have no choice.
If you intalled a wheel w/o the sensor a TPMS warning light stays lit on the dash indicating a tire pressure issue.
Just wondering if they put a TPMS sensor in the spare.
