Question Time for new tires! Widest tire to fit a 1997 Cobra 9" rear wheel?

I have inspection coming up next month and I know my tires won't pass, so i'm looking for replacements and wanted to see what everyone has and how they like them. I'm not looking to break the bank with these tires as they're only for daily driving, I have the dr's for racing. I looked at the Sumitomo HTRZ II's on Tirerack, they are $96 for the 275/40/17 and $85 for the 255/40/17. The dry traction rating looks pretty good for a budget tire and the wet traction isn't horrible. Also, what is the widest tire I should put on the rear with a 9" rim? Thanks!

i really do like the sumitomo htrzIIs i ran them back when i had my 17x8s all around i ran 245/45/17s and i ran 1.9x 60fts about 2-4 times i believe they are better and better for track imo as they wear they are good for constant 2.0s when new. only draw back is the milage sucks they are decent but i went through 6 tires total. b/c tire is like 92 for 245/45 at tire rack + shipping(25ish) discount tires direct has no shipping cost but doesnt sell sumitomo but for my fronts i am running nitto555 245/45 which are 105 each and basically i am playing like few more dollars for a better tire, now the 275/40s for 555s are like 160 each so its your call. it isnt a bad tire all all, the sumis that is.

Check the Kumho ECSTAs at TireRack. They are inexpensive and very, very good. Excellent traction dry and wet.

yeah, ignore me. i vote potenza's, but then again those are for more than just daily driving.

and in case it hasnt been mentioned already, the largest tire you can fit on the 9" wheels are 275's. ive heard of people getting away with 285's, but thats prob with a narrow tire.

The Sumitomo's have a higher rating for dry traction than the Kumho's, the wet traction is about the same. Plus the Sumitomo's are cheaper and the tread pattern looks pretty cool. What size rims are you running those Kumho's on Joe?

too much

$180 each for 275/40/17. they are decent on the strip, and grip like a mofo on the corners. these are the ones i have on my car.

Bridgestone Potenza RE750

I think a 285 will fit on that wheel also. The Sumitomo's are a great tire for their price.

I've ran Contisports, KDWS's and the HRTZIIs. The HRTZs are what I have right now, and they're pretty okay, the dry traction really isn't as awesome as people say, but that's in comparison to the KDWS's, which are a much better tire. They're pretty decent tires though

The KDW's would be my first choice, I just don't want to spend that kind on money.

LOL. Look up Eagle GS-D3's and the KDW's won't seem like so much.
