Question Tire Help - 18" x 8" Tires for Ice?

I am the proud "new" owner of a 2005 GT. The car came with 18" x 8" TSW Montage rims with Bridgestone Poteza tires.

I live on island in the "Bannana Belt" of Alaska with a population of 8,800 people and 14 miles of road so the availability of tire information is slim to say the least. My main concern for my huge commute during the winter is ice. We don't get ice often, but I would like traction when we do. Since it is going to cost me a lot of extra shipping to get new tires here, I was hoping someone could recommend a decent ice tire and the appropriate sizing for my 18" x 8" rims at a decent price.

I know I'm asking a lot, but I would sure appreciate some input from the tire experts that hang out here.

Thanks guys (and gals)!

I think the manufacturer is Bridgestone but I know the tire is called the Blizzack (sp). My friend puts them on his BMW M5 in the winter. I have driven the car in the snow and ice and I am not kidding when I say I was doing the speed limit or above evrywhere I went. If I needed snow tires for my GT I would get those. But I have an F-150 so I don't need them

My daughter runs studded snows on her Focus and she lives up by Vail Pass Colorado. She has never been stuck.Yeah I know its a front wheel drive and all but she tried Blizzacks and sliding backwards down Vail pass when it was icey scared the heck out her.
I remember living in Anchorage,Alaska when I was kid back in 63'.the roads were ice for about 5 months out of the year, great for ice skating. My dad ran studded snows w/sand bags on his 59'Impala wagon and got great traction.

As mentioned, you'd probably want to get a set of 17" wheels to mount your snow tires on. I've asked and the V6's 16" won't fit over the front calipers on the GT.

These were the only studdable tires I was able to find at tirerack that would fit our car.
Winterforce M+S

This is a write-up tire rack has on studs.
Winter Tech - Metal Studs For Winter Tires at The Tire Rack.

I ran Firestone Winter 225x60x16 (won't fit the +05 GT) on my 2000 GT. They were studdable but I ordered them without studs. They worked well in the snow. I don't believe Firestone manufactures them anymore.

I haven't bought snow tires for my '07 yet. I'm going to hold off a year to see how it handles in the snow.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks all for the information - you are all great!

I am actually trying to find studdable tires, but I have two sets of rims. The perfect 18" Foose rims will never see nasty weather. However, the 18" TSWs are going to become my "winter" rims.

Does anyone know of a studdable tire that will fit 18" X 8" rims? If not, maybe I'll got the Blizzak route...

Thanks again!
