Did some quick searching and found a little info. I'm just curious as to what those of you in the Northern climates who really drive their mustangs (IE all year round ) use for winter tires. Winter is coming here in the northeastern US, and I have been looking at various tires in the 215 65/16 flavor.
A friend who has a German auto shop has had good luck with Hancook's on his Audi Quattro's, and also offers good deals on Toyo's. Some locals recommended Blizzak WS-60's as well as the often recommended Nokia Hakkapelitta'a, but nobody seems to have experience with tires on the newer mustangs.
I drive about 20-25,000 miles a year and 10-12 of that is in the winter. So I'm looking for something that has good winter traction and decent life. I'll be getting new wheels and tires in the spring and running these current ones as dedicated snows.
I've looked at the Big 'O' and Discount tire web sites and I can't find a set of studded tires for 16" Mustang wheels. If anyone knows a brand that sells studded tires for the Mustang I'd sure appreciate the info. I really don't want to have to break out the Escort station wagon out of the backyard this winter just so that I can get around. It feels like I'm driving with the emergency brake on after driving the Mustang.

I'm running the 18" wheels & tires, left very few choices for me. I ended up going with Hancock tires from Discount Tires. Running 16" should give you alot more options.

I just bought a set (4) of Cooper Weather Master S/T 2 studded snow tires for driving my 2006 GT over here in Washington State. Mine are 17 inch but you should have no problem getting them in 16 inch. I got them from Tire Factory. They appear to be really good tires, deep tread for powder or slightly compact snow with serations on the inside of the nobs of the tread as well as the tops. And then of course the studs for compact snow and ice. We don't have any of that yet here so I can't tell you from experience how they work but you might want to check them out for yourself and see what you think. Yea I drive mine year round also, if my wife wasn't going to college over the winter I would probebly drive her little KIA when the weather got real bad but not an option now. Oh well I love driving the stang.
Thanks folks! I'm copying down the tire names and going shopping. I reeaallly didn't want to have to drive the escort. I do need to detune it and put the stock tune back in though to smooth it up and tone it down some for the ice. Rats!

I am going to stick with my stock tires for this upcoming winter and see how i fair. if my tires hold their own i will keep them for another winter or two. If they don't hold up in the poor weather conditions. I am planning on grabbing another 2 rims, and 2 good snow tires and keeping them in the garage to use in the winter then swap back to the OEM tires and rims for the rest of the year.
I honestly just want to have some snow on the ground to try it out and get the feel of it. I have heard some horror stories about mustangs in the snow, and then i have heard some good stories as well. I guess we will have to wait and see.
I wish i kept my mountaineer, that thing was a beast in the snow
To follow up, I ended up getting a set of 4 Bridgestone Blizzak WS60's in 215/65 16. Just in time for a light dusting yesterday. The felt good on the way home, but much of the snow had been cleared by then. We'll see how the do over the next few months.

That's pretty much my plan too. However, it's awfully hilly up there in West Caldwell compared to my area... It's no fun getting caught on a snowy hill in a Mustang without snow tires... You might want to keep some sand and a shovel in your trunk...
I'm a newb but a proud owner of a '08 GT premium. Have a couple questions maybe you guys can help with.
I live near Colorado Springs, CO and we don't get a lot of snow, but we do get an inch or two which turns to ice (compacts or melts during the day, refreezes at night). Prior to my 'stang, I had an explorer with 4WD and snow tires (no studs). On ice, it performed poorly.
For the 'stang, will snow tires even help on ice? Again, we get very little snow, but is does ice up pretty good at times. It sounds like studded tires would work best. So here's the questions ...
1) Do I need 4 studded tires, or can I get away with just two (rear)?
2) If I have 17" rims, but can only find a used pair of 16" rims, can I mount studded tires on the 16" and put them on my 'stang? Or will the bolts not line up?
