Choosing new tires, your opinions. 2005 Mustang GT
Hey everyone.
Just got my baby back and had the trunk lid between the taillights painted black which looks sweet. So I'll be posting pictures of that soon. Anyway when considering mods for my 05 mustang gt, the obvious ones are the intake, tune, and ud pulleys. I'll be doing those soon too.
I then put tires on the list as I feel that my tires are not up to par lately as evidenced by the way the car felt and performed at the strip. I am working on my technique, but I felt my tires were also a factor with my 14.4@98.42mph run, with 2.172 60' foot. Back end got squirrelly shifting from 2nd into 3rd, lots of excessive wheel spin with a pretty tame launch imo. That was on the stock pirellis with nearly 30k miles on them.
So I have some questions about tires. I want to stay on the stock rims for now, so 17 inchers it is for me at the moment. I have been searching through the forums for tire suggestions and found a couple threads, but nothing I felt confident in making a decision in. So here are the questions.
What tire would you recommend?
I live in Florida, all-season vs. summer? How much will the "cold"(i know its florida, heh) affect the summer tires?
The car is a daily driver around town, so I want excellent grip and handling while not going extreme and having drag radials. I really don't care too much about ride comfort.
Optimal size? 255/45/17?

Thanks.
A lot of guys including myself love the BFG G-Force tires. Excellent cornering characteristics as well as straight line performance.

This has nothing to do with the tires thread you posted..
thekillerkiwi.. if u didnt have work you woulda saw some serious stuff.. it was i think 40 out.. perfect weather.. well anyways.. my good friends 06 Evolution 9 MR ran a 12.0 in the 1/4... got it on tape.. his 60 ft was 1.60.. not bad for a 17yr old .. psh and to people that think kids cant drive at all.. but ohh yeah.. some 45 yr old guy had one of those fast fast cars.. and at the end of the stripe he was clocked at 130mph.. forwhat what the ET was.. but a second after that u saw smoke.. u saw the car spin and dissapear.. then you saw it hit a wall and sparks shot out everywere.. the track was closed from 6:30 to like 8ish... thats why my buddy only got one run in.. but damn 12.0 is great anyways.. who needs a 2nd run?? for an evo w/ intake headers exhaust and tune?.. thats golden..

A dry-wet performance tire would provide the best results, as a tire that is performance all-season is of little benefit in warm climates where you live. You did say that your car is a daily driver, so keep in mind that a summer performance tire will not last as long. It is a question of the level of performance you want, and how often you are willing to buy new tires.
What about the g-force sport? Which do you think performed the best, the KDW or KDW 2.
Any thoughts on potenzas or sumitomos?
The G-Force KDW 2's were very sticky tires.I even ran a set on my 96'GT.Sure you can stuff all the HIPO goodies on your ride but if you can't hook up ,you spin.. waste time and rubber. Its like running a bad clutch assembly.
i live in maryland and i have nitto invos 255/50 and i love them.. they are different looking. they are awesome in the wet and dry. I have cold air tune and exhaust and when i heat them up they dont lose any traction at all. They arent considered a drag radial either even though they look a lot like them.
I just put Falken FK-452 on my car....I was really impressed how well they planted when I gave them the take off test....I have not yet pushed the envelope on cornering...yet....from what I can tell, I am impressed so far. My shop did recommend the Nittos...especially if amount of mileage may be an issue for you...my car is a weekend crusier...so I do not care how many miles I can get before needing replacment.

About how much mileage do the nitto NT555 and BFG KDW get?

Since mileage is not really a concern of mine, the shop tech never mentioned specifically the mileage rating for the Nittos, he just said if I am concerned about mileage rating, the Nittos are rated for more mileage than the Falkens.
I believe Nitto and Falken are both soft compound (10,000 mile) tires. Guy at the track was not happy he got the Nittos. Even though they hook good, he didn't realize till he got them home that they are so soft he'd only get one year out of them.
I'm looking at 255/50-17's but I need to see them on to know if they are wide enough on my 9" rims.
Also, 255/50's are almost exactly the same diameter as stock.
