If you can, consider finding a cheap pair of wheels and drag radials or better yet slicks for the rear. Just put them on when you are at the track (or going there if you get drag radials). Watch ebay - there are usually deals on there that will work for you. 15" wheels are the most common with slicks, while drag radials can be lots of sizes, 15-17". The smaller the wheel, the taller the tire you can run. I'm not sure what car you have (or what the OE wheel size was), but if you have an older
stang, it probably came with 15" wheels originally, 16" for newer 5.0's.
Dropping the pressure too far will just get you a tire spun clean off the wheel, so be careful with that. Those wrinkle walls that we see the pros use don't use much air - but they often use screw-on arrangements to keep them seated, too. Run at least 24 pounds of air in there until you have a good idea of what is happening to the tire (mark the tire/rim with some chalk to see if you are getting the tire to spin on the wheel, which is a problem you need to watch.
Track action is tough on rear wheels AND tires. The used route on ebay is a good way to start without spending a ton. After you wear out those tires in a single session, you'll be glad you went this route.

i called americas tire and they told me 245/45/17s would fit
