2008 Mustang... Question about snow tires and TPMS
Hi,
I'm considering getting a 2008 mustang GT next year, and just have some questions about putting snow tires on it.
I'd probably get a 2nd set of rims for the snow tires to be mounted on permanently.
Can anyone tell me if I need the tire pressure sensors too for the snow tires?
If I put the snow tires on without tpms, will I just get a warning light all winter? There's no sound warning is there?
Also, when I go back to the regular wheels, does anything need to be done, or will the sensors just continue to work as they did before they were taken off?
Last question - is it safe for me to switch the wheels myself each winter, or does a tire place like conrads or whatever actually do something special when switching wheels?
If you don't get a set of monitors for the aftermarket tires, all you'll have to deal with is an annoying dash light. In this scenario, once you put the factory tires back on (in their same location) the light should go out.
If you get an extra set of monitors, you will have to re-program the sensors each time you switch out your tires. I suspect you could find the procedure, although any reputable tire store should be able to easily re-program them for you.
FYI -- I purchased an extra set of monitors for my new '08 -- I got a pretty good deal from the dealer at around $200.00 for the set. They can be had cheaper on ebay, but I didn't want to mess with the uncertainty of a used set and just ponied up the money for the new ones.

What he said! +1
I would just deal with the light for those few months.
Also you can change over at home yourself no problems.

I have two sets of wheels. The ones on my car now do not have the tpms. The warning comes on when I start the car and there is a single tone. I just hit the reset button and it's gone. Every once in a while and randomly it will come up while I'm driving. Same deal, a single tone and the warning message. Just hit reset and it's gone. It's a minor annoyance. IMO not worth getting tpms for the new wheels.
There should be no issue with you switching your wheels. The only thing extra I do when changing wheels is use a torque wrench. I've been told you can warp rotors if you mis-torque the bolts.
