V6 to 5.4L GT500 motor

I just won a GT500 at auction. It was wrecked in the front, but all the parts look good. It didn't even bust the radiator.

Having the car shipped here in the next few days. I'm definitely nervous to take on this project.

I plan on stripping the GT500 of what I don't need and selling those parts.

How many of y'all have swapped out a body harness in the s197?

I figured I'd post this here since the GT500 forum is almost dead and the V6 guys won't understand.

Sounds like an exciting project. I think most of the parts you'll be selling will actually be from your V6. You're likely to swap most of the parts from the GT500 (apart from the bodyshell) so there won't be many spares from that car.

That's true. I will be selling the complete interior of the GT500 minus the cluster. I have seats and steering wheel from a 2013 GT500 already. Suspension will be sold, because my suspension is already upgraded along with the springs. My main concern is what the body harness swap looks like.

The gt500 although minor in damage is beyond repair structurally. My car has a lot of sentimental value, which is why I am doing this swap to begin with. I've owned it since new, so I intend to pass it on to my son when he's old enough to responsibly drive it.

I really hope to get some pointers from the community in the days/weeks/months ahead rather than all the negativity. It's been one of my dreams for this car. I didn't really come here to have people trying to squash my dreams and unmotivate me.

I think there are a few YT on line showing folks that made the swap. I don't recall anyone of late on AFM that made the swap. But if there are member that made the swap and they run across your thread I bet you and they will be exchanging some PMs

I doubt anyone will voice negative opinions about the project. Someone might say WHY? Which you've answered. Someone might say just restore the GT500, which you also answered. Any blatant negative non constructive comments we will handled, believe me.

One request; post periodic progress reports.

The beauty is that you'd be swapping components from the GT500 into an identical chassis so there's no fabrication involved. You also have everything you need to complete the project so it should be successful. Just take lots of photos as you begin the teardown on each vehicle so you'll know how everything fits together when you begin reassembly

Will do. Thanks. I made sure to incorporate big moments in my life with my mustang knowing that I would pass it down to my son one day. I'm flying out tomorrow morning to go pay for the GT500 and have it shipped.

Will post updates regularly once it begins.

I agree about the beauty of things. The only things that I am struggling with brainstorming as of now is

1. Where should I start (I'm thinking about starting with the rearend and fuel pump first. This is why I was curious about the body harness swap)
2. Where am I going to put all my old parts during the swap (engine/tranny, rearend, etc.)
3. I am dreading the A/C part of the swap already. I have no experience in A/C work.

I'd start with the interior first. Since you'll need the GT500 body harness, you'll need to strip down the interior anyway and you could use the opportunity to swap in some of the GT500 interior components (including the gauge cluster).
Any parts removed from each vehicle that are surplus to requirements can be stored inside the GT500 passenger compartment and trunk until you sell them off. Start looking for someone to buy your V6 engine/tranny/driveshaft/rear end before you remove them from the car. This will avoid the headache of trying to find somewhere to store them.
As far as the AC goes, you might be able to retain your existing compressor and not have to dismantle the AC system. Compare the V6 system to the GT500's, especially the position of the AC compressor and lines in the engine bay. If they're the same, you can just separate the AC compressor from its mounting bracket on the V6 engine and set it aside.

So i'll be honest with some of the details of the car. Some albeit embarrassing, I rather let y'all in on all the info.

The GT500 was a copart auction. I didn't know that copart offered inspection services for an additional charge before auction. I went solely based on the listing info and pictures.

They did list that the car started and ran at idle when it first came in. I usually have a better display of judgement in financial dealings, but I guess we all lose some sometimes.

Well when I flew in to pay for the car, they told me that Copart policy is that you can't see a car that you won until you pay for the car. I felt nervous about this, but I went ahead with payment because I was already binded by the sale anyways.

Once i went to the car, the interior is pretty immaculate. I did notice that there were two gauges on the pillar. First thought is "This guy dragged the car"

I popped open the trunk. There is a tank in there for Liquid Methanol injection. Followed the hose all the way to the CAI.

Engine looks good. Radiator is still intact. Intercooler is bent.

Found a jumper box and tried to start it real quick just to hear it run. Jumper box didn't have enough juice. Found another box out there. Tried plugging it in. Engine cranked but didn't have enough juice to turn all the way. Started clicking.

Clearly the car was dragged, but now I own it. Debating on if I should just go forward with the swap, or if I should part it out and make a bigger profit. Car is being shipped here as we speak. Should arrive tomorrow or Sunday I suppose.

The key question for you is whether the engine turns over, starts, and runs. It has an aftermarket CAI and a smaller supercharger pulley so if the engine is healthy, it'll definitely be putting out a lot more than the original 500hp. If you can get the engine to crank, pull the plugs and do a compression check on all cylinders. Also pull the dipstick and check the state of the engine oil.

Oil looked good. I checked that. I will do a compression test when it gets here. Will update soon.
