Almost every car nowadays has a silencer of some sort. I have removed dozens for friends. The silencer does just what it says silences the incoming air. The air filter is rather large and the air going into it is loud. So they put a box on the upstream side and then have a small round pipe from that box going into the fender or just route it in thru the engine compartment. this quiets the air going into the filter box and makes the car quiet which most people like a quiet car. This comes with a sacrifice, loss of HP. Remove the silencer pipe and even the box if you can and you can increase the HP and the responsiveness of the car as more air is entering quicker into the intake. As long as there are no electronic sensors before the air filter it is absolutely safe and advantageous to remove all that crap. It will make any car sound alot meaner, increase the HP and also increase the MPG. Don't let anyone tell you different. TAKE IT APART WITH THE INFO i GAVE YOU AND ANYONE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. tHROW IN A K&N filter and enjoy the extra 5-20 HP. Let me know if you need anymore guidance and please share this with someone else you know. Rick

I think what you are referring to is the pre-catalyst in the air tube of some early 2005s. It's a white honeycomb disk in the air tube. You can remove it it your car has one.

There is also a rubber piece that extends from the airbox into the fenderwell. That can come off as well.

Welcome aboard!

Remove the airtube from the box and look inside to see if the white precatalyst is in there. If it is, you can pull it out with a pair of small needle nose pliers.

Is this in the early 05 GT's and V6's or just the GT's?

There's another post on this topic in this section as well. Here's a link to an old post with a link to a picture of it.
