Gear Lube question?
 
I went to the local shop today to get a quote on my gear install for my 2008 Mustang Gt, and they quoted me at $300, but told me NOT to buy synthetic lube...Does anyone know why this is??? I had purchesed Royal Purple already, seeing as that's what alot of people recommended, as well as American Muscle recommends it...but is there any certain reason why I shouldn't use it since it's synthetic and they said don't get synthetic?

This is from a local shop that only does gears and axles. They know what they are talking about.

Hmm...ok, I was just curious as to why they'd tell me that when Royal Purple is sold with the gears on American Muscle...another question arrises from this link, since there is no mention of this on the AM muscle page...would I have to add a Posi-Additive to the Royal Purple like they suggest on the Link??

they say to avoid the cheap gear lubes on that link, yet all the cheap lubes are non-synthetic, and Royal Purple is the most expensive lube carried at any of the local automotive stores here in my area.....

I have 2 bottles of the Royal Purple as well as 2 bottles of Lucus Oil Gear lube (non-synthetic) ($20 lube compared to $6).....just trying to decide what to use I guess....

I have about 40,000 miles on my 4.10s since switching to non-synthetic and I have no issues.

This is just like asking should I use synthetic engine oil or not...so not sure I should even respond but you know I can't stay out of a good oil/lube discussion after being in the biz 14 years :winks

There is no reason NOT to use synthetic gear oil; as a matter of fact, it has many advantages (cooler temps, which leads to increased component life, plus less friction, better low temp fluidity vs mineral oils, basically same inherent benefits as synthetic engine oils plus better resistance to foaming, etc).

Just be sure to add your friction modifier if whatever you put in there needs it.

I would not run synthetic gear lube. It doesn't bind to metal as well as conventional.

That's what the friction modifier is for.

I ended up rebuilding everything on the back half of my car (brilliant idea by the way:nono:), new control arm bolts torqued correctly, re-lube/grease everything, cleaned everything, etc and while doing it noticed one of my axle seals was leaking. Glad I noticed, but I seem to be making a lot of additional work for myself lately when I should just get the car done.

Anyway I called Torsen to get a fluid recommendation and they wouldn’t give me one for liability reasons (that was odd). So I contacted Rehagen Racing which is a shop/race team that fields a fleet of FR500’s. They use fully synthetic Mobil 1 and run 6 hour endurance races with it. I think it’s fair to say they know what they are doing.

I had already purchased some Royal Purple 75-90 and asked what they thought about that and without hesitation said run it.

And for the person asking about adding friction modifier to the Royal Purple…..read the bottle:winks. It’s already in there.:bigthumbsup

it's already in the Mobil 1 Gear Lube as well :bigthumbsup

For my '06, the standard differential lube from Ford is synthetic oil, with the friction modifier for the clutch packs.
