Believe it or not, Ford considers all bottom fill auto transmissions to be "filled for life" units. It only recommends that you check the fluid every 15k. Certain front wheel drive vehicles have recommended intervals of 30k or 60k along with heavy duty trucks equipped with Torqshift transmissions. Most dealers still recommend changing the fluid and filter every 30k. I personally don't believe in not changing the fluid and always recommend that it be changed every 30k. We teardown far too many transmissions with cooked fluid and most have under 60k on the odometer.

Ford told me 100K miles... My service manual from autozone told me 60K miles or more depending on how I applied those miles.. but I had mine changed by Ford at 52K miles and they stated that it had burnt fluid. I know.... go figure

05 gt auto, K&N CAI(off at the time/no tune yet), Mac LTs/prochamber/Mac ABs, Tokico adjustable shocks/struts, FRPP K springs, J&M camber plates, J&M adjustable UCA, CHE adjustable panhard bar, Roush bumper, Roush hood scoop, black out grille, gt500 wing, 315/35/20 NTO5 rear and 255/35/20 555s front on MRR wheels.

Here is a link to the online owner's manual:

2006 Ford Mustang Owners Manual - PDFCast.org

However, you won't find the maintenance schedule in there. The schedule is listed in the Ford service manual which I have included below. You will note the GT has a 5R55S automatic transmission.

It states under the Normal Schedule at 30,000 miles:

"Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid on all vehicles equipped with the TorqShift, 4R100, 4F50N or 4F27E transmissions. Inspect automatic transmission fluid level using the fluid level indicator on all other vehicles (if equipped with a fluid level indicator). Change the in-line service-installed transmission fluid filter (if equipped)."

There is no dipstick / fluid level indicator in the 5R55S transmission, so if you followed this schedule, you would never check or change the transmisssion fluid!

Vehicle manufactures are concerned with what the cost of ownership number will be, and if the components will make it through the warranty period without failure. Moving oil change intervals from 3K miles to 5K miles helps reduce that number. Eliminating transmission fluid changes does the same. I'm sure your local Ford Dealer would love to sell you a new transmission after your warranty expires!

The 5R55S uses MERCON V fluid, which is subject to chemical break down / burning. I'd suggest you change it every 30K miles. I personally like to alternate between pan drop / filter changes and flushes so the filter get changed every other time, and all the fluid is completely replaced every other time.

SECTION 100-03: Maintenance Schedule
2006 Mustang Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Procedure revision date: 03/14/2006

Maintenance Schedule — Gasoline Engines

The maintenance schedule is designed to protect against major repairs resulting from neglect or inadequate maintenance and to prolong the life of the vehicle.

General Maintenance Information
NOTE: This is a generic maintenance schedule for all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. There may be items listed that do not apply to all vehicles.
The Normal Schedule applies to operation of the vehicle under typical, everyday driving conditions. The maintenance frequency in this schedule typifies what the vast majority of vehicles will require. The listed services should be carried out at specified mileage intervals. There are, however, additional services required that only the noted vehicles require.

If the vehicle is operated in one or more of the following special operating conditions, those additional services will be required. The special operating conditions are:
  • towing or carrying heavy loads.
  • extensive idling and/or driving at low speeds for long distances.
  • driving in dusty conditions.
  • off-road operation.
  • use of E85 fuel 50% of the time or greater (flex fuel vehicles only).
There are also exceptions to the Normal Operating Schedule which will require more frequent maintenance for some components. Those exceptions are:
  • standard vehicle axle — maintenance and lubrication.
  • police and taxi vehicles — maintenance and lubrication.
  • engine oil and Premium Gold coolant — time-based and mileage-based intervals.
  • change brake fluid every 2 years (Class A Motorhome).
Special Operating Condition Requirements

When towing a trailer or using a camper or car-top carrier:
  • Change engine oil and install a new oil filter every 4,800 km (3,000 miles) or 3 months.
  • Change automatic transmission fluid (not required on 6R60 transmission), lubricate 4x2 wheel bearings, install new grease seals and adjust bearings every 48,000 km (30,000 miles). If equipped, change the in-line service installed transmission fluid filter.
  • Change transfer case fluid every 96,000 km (60,000 miles).
  • Change manual transmission fluid as required.
  • Inspect and lubricate U-joints and halfshafts as required.
During extensive idling and/or low speed driving for long distances, as in heavy commercial use such as delivery, taxi, patrol car or livery:
  • Change engine oil and install a new oil filter every 4,800 km (3,000 miles) or 3 months or 200 hours of engine operation.
  • Lube front lower control arm and steering linkage ball joints with zerk fittings (if equipped) every 4,800 km (3,000 miles) or 3 months.

  • Change rear axle lubricant every 80,000 km (50,000 miles) (E450 and F450/550 only).
  • Change transfer case fluid every 96,000 km (60,000 miles).
  • Install a new cabin air filter as required (if equipped).
  • Inspect and lubricate U-joints and halfshafts.
  • Inspect and lubricate steering linkage ball joints with zerk fittings.
Use of E85 fuel 50% of the time or greater (flex fuel vehicles only):

  • Special operating conditions: 4,800 km (3,000 miles), 3 months or 200 hours of operation, whichever occurs first.
Premium Gold Coolant
  • Change Premium Gold coolant at 5 years or 160,000 km (100,000 miles) of the vehicle's life, whichever occurs first.
  • After the initial change, change coolant every 3 years or 80,000 km (50,000 miles) thereafter.
Normal Vehicle Axle Maintenance
Rear axles and power take-off (PTO) units containing synthetic lubricant and light duty trucks equipped with Ford-design axles are lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless service is required, or if a leak is suspected or the axle assembly has been submerged in water.
The axle and PTO fluid should be changed anytime they have been submerged in water. Non-synthetic rear axle lubricants should be replaced every 4,800 km (3,000 miles) or 3 months, whichever occurs first, during extended trailer tow operation above 21°C (70°F) ambient and wide open throttle for extended periods above 45 mph.
The 3,000 mile lube change interval may be waived if the axle was filled with 75W140 synthetic gear lubricant meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A, part number F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent. Add 4 ounces of additive friction modifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent for complete refill of Traction-Lok® rear axles.
The axle lubricant should be changed anytime an axle has been submerged in water.
Police and Taxi Vehicle Axle Maintenance
Replace rear axle lubricant every 160,000 km (100,000 miles). Rear axle lubricant change may be waived if the axle was filled with 75W140 synthetic gear lubricant meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A, part number FITZ-19580-B or equivalent. Add 4 ounces of additive friction modifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent for complete refill of Traction-Lok® rear axles.
The axle lubricant should be changed anytime an axle has been submerged in water.
E and F 450 and 550 Series Axle Maintenance
Replace rear axle lubricant every 100,000 miles under normal driving conditions on all E and F 450 and 550 series applications. For E and F 450 and 550 series vehicles operated at or near maximum Gross Vehicle Weights, the rear axle lubricant should be replaced every 50,000 miles.
In addition, the 50,000 mile schedule should be observed when the vehicles are operated under the Special Operating Conditions.

Class A Motorhome
  • Every 2 years — change brake fluid.
  • Every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) — change the automatic transmission fluid.
  • Change rear axle fluid at 80,000 km (50,000 miles), 160,000 km (100,000 miles) and 240,000 km (150,000 miles).

Even though the trans lacks the luxury of a dipstick the fluid level can be checked.

This is true, but if you follow the schedule to the letter, it states:

"(if equipped with a fluid level indicator)."

I found the Maintenance Schedule and other owner's documentation online. Here if the link to the Maintenance Schedule:

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WO6MUS/~MUS~LEN/41/06frdmg3e.pdf

If that link does not work, then go to:

http://www.motorcraftservice.com

Then click on the "Owners Guides" link on the left. You will then need to enter you vehicle year and model.

Page 16 of the 2006 Mustang Maintenance Guide states:

"Change automatic transmission fluid on vehicles equipped with the Torqshift transmission. Replace the remote filter element on the vehicles equipped with Torqshift transmission. Inspect automatic transmission/transaxle fluid level on all vehicle, if equipped with dipstick."
