Smile 2005 Mustang GT with TWO VIN Numbers

Hi everyone...first time poster.

I have a 2005 Mustang GT that I'm about to offer for sale. I've been in the process of transferring title from CA to TX (it's actually my wife's car...a gift from her dad a few years ago).

Anyway, in the process of transferring title, we discovered that the vehicle has two separate and distinct VIN numbers...one under the windshield and one on the label on the door-jam on the driver's side. Anyone have any idea why this might be? Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks in advance.

Best
KC Tex

Are you sure its 2 vins and not a vin and a build tag? Pics?? Or post the #s would help as well.

If indeed they are both vins, that would lead me to believe the car was rebuilt by some means. Was it used before it was a gift? Before your wife's father? As said before, post them and we can disprove or assure you of this.

If those are both VIN numbers, you can track the history of each by entering them at AutoCheck's Check My Ride: Welcome! for most recent numbers.

There are very few ways this can happen.

The only "legit" way is for the dash to have been swapped out (can't recall off the top of my head if the VIN stamp is attached to the body under the dash or the dash in the 05s). At one time Ford used to affix them to the upper dash pad -- once replacing the weatherbeaten cracked dash pad in my Torino I had to drill out the donor car VIN plate and re-rivet the proper plate in.

Unfortunately, almost all other cases are the result of some underhanded or illegal activity.

In those cases a donor VIN plate is obtained from either a wrecked car that hasn't been registered as salvage yet, or a wrecked car by private sale. It's then attached to a salvage or stolen car and resold as a clean title.

In most cases the door jamb sticker is the correct VIN as the sticker is difficult to counterfeit and impossible to remove without destroying it.

If you take the car to the dealer they should be able to pull the VIN from the ECU and see if it matches one of the VINs you already have
