Largest tires for 2006 Mustang GT?

I have an 06 GT convertable with a magnacharger, borla long tubes and magnaflow exhaust. It's time for new tires as I can't get any traction. The car is driven about 20,000 miles a year. I have the optional 18" wheels. What is the widest tire that will fit these wheels and any suggestions on tires. Thanks

+1 255 is the "kosher" size. However, I have heard of people going up to 275's in the rear without issues.

+1. I've seen 275 ran on the stock rims, but I wouldn't do it. 255 is the recommended size.

Yeah, the stock 17" size is just to narrow for these cars.
What happened to the 245/45's The SN95's came with! Those at least had much more rubber contact, and offered better handling.

When I first got on here, people were squeezing 315s onto their s197s, on new rims, of course.

Here are a couple of websites that can help clear things up about what size rim to use for what width tire.

Understanding your wheels:
http://www.yokohamatire.com/utwheels.asp

Understanding your tires:
http://www.yokohamatire.com/utperf.asp

I would want a wider section width than rim width, to protect my rims from curbs.

2006 Black, GT, spoiler delete, five speed, leather, custom welded straight pipes with resonators, sequential turn signals, Hurst Pro Performance shifter. FRPP 4.10s with Motive bearing kit, Spydershaft one piece aluminum driveshaft, w/ Spicer 1330 U-joints, Steeda UCA and LCAs, chrome moly panhard rod. bye bye wheel hop, hello traction! SCT XCalII, BBK CAI, ZEX 100 shot.
I've written a book or two. Google David Buschhorn to laugh at my scribblings.
