My ring and pinion exploded this morning

As the title states, I was driving to work, cruising along at a steady speed on the highway - then BANG! Clunk, clunk, clunk....

Pulled off, got towed to a buddy's shop...the pinion gear is missing chunks, took out the ring, put a hole in the carrier... and... the lock bolt was twisted into a million pieces. Sweet.

So, obviously I need a new diff and r&p - so 3.73's it is, but what to do about the diff?

I take the car to the track a fair bit, so I'm wondering if I should spend the extra $300 and get the torsen vs the trak-lok.

I realize that would be a sweet upgrade, but this ordeal is going to cost me a solid $1,000. Not something I needed right now.

Opinions anyone?

What kind of track? Drag or road course?

Oh whoops, thought I specified.

All road course. Never dragged.

I'll try to get some pics next week. It's pretty epic - the pinion is twisted. Looks like a Dodge rear end lol.

I would look at the torsen for sure, now is the time.

Also now would be the time to reconsider the rear end ratio -- how is the gearing matched to the track(s) where you go? Would a little taller or shorter gearing be helpful?

Maybe you can find a complete rear axle out of a Boss or track pack car that has the torsen in it, at a junk yard?

Hey now..aren't these cars built Ford Tough? lol

I've got 3.55's in it now, used to have 4.10's and they were just too short for the road course. 3.55's are a bit tall, so I'll probably just go 3.73.

I'd love to get my hands on a boss or track pack rear end, but junkyards have mostly been turned into recycle yards around here, so that's not really any option unfortunately. Edit: I actually found one at a somewhat nearby yard for $2500.00 LMAO no one's gonna pay that.
