You can make some money on the side by having your own garage dyno and charge people cheaper than actual shops

Good call, charge 50 dollars a pull versus the usaul 100 dollars. It pays for itself after only 400 satisfied customers.

Never leave a good time to find another.

Yeah, before you know it, you'll break even for what you paid for the dynometer then it's all profit from there

Yeah except you neighbors call the City after you do 20 pulls and they come in and shut you down. And yes, even if you live in the sticks it will happen there too, maybe even more likely.

But you could rent a little space in a light Industrial park for $1000 a month and put it there. Except the City would come shut you down there too because you are working on cars and are not a licensed shop and the area is not zoned for that.

Then you go looking for something that is zoned for working on cars, get your repair facility license and find something that is at a minimum $2500 a month. Then the city comes in and shuts you down because you didn’t pull a certificate of occupancy.

Then you go down to the city offices to pull a certificate of occupancy and they won’t give you one because the Fire Marshal, the city Architect and the city Electricity department have not signed off on it.

When you get them all to come down each one wants you to make changes to the building/property until it is up to their specifications that are 99% based on a whim. And no it doesn’t matter if you are leasing. Someone has to do it.

Then the city planner comes down and wants a whole bunch of stuff done inside and out and you original budget for build out went from $20,000 to $100,000 just like that.

And after all that, which should only take about a year you will be ready to open your doors.

How many pulls do you need to do to break even again?

As long as it is it can't be heard from other people's houses and it's on your own property i don't think it would attract attention calling for a shutdown.

Isn't the ability to create a load and thus 'real world' driving conditions preferable to the simpler inertia dynos like most dynojets (which is why they tend to read more optimistic HP numbers)? I thought for tuning all ranges of throttle, Mustang Dynos were preferable to DynoJets which are mostly suited to WOT tuning. I see mostly the 224x and 248x inertia-only models in shops although looking at their website, i see they now offer some LC modesl w/ the load control. Haven't seen any out in the wild though.

This dyno has the eddy current power absorber unit (PAU) to allow exact high-performance tuning of spark and fuel curves with true real-world road load simulation
regardless, this looks like a pretty good price considering what they cost new.
