Going the other way
Maybe its my age but I decided to go to a higher gear ratio 3:31s then I have now 3:55s. The reasons for this change is becasue of the way I drive my car. Its mostly a DD and I do two to four open track events a season.
The higher gears will give a bit better milage, about 10 mph on the top end and turn the motor around 200 rpm slower at highway speeds. I am not a drag racer so the couple of tenths I will give up on a drag stip do not concern me. I also limit the rpms to 6k on the track because I am a firm believer that over reving a stock bottom end is the best way to kill it. If Im limiting to 6k the only way to make it faster is to change gears.
When I bought the car it had 4:10s and that was fun but was way to low for what I wanted. I changed to 3:55s and that has been a pretty good compromise but its time to do something else. I ordered a set of Ford gears, a master install kit with all new Timkin bearings and also a set of carbon clutch disks for the trac-lok considering it now has 40k on the original. If its not too hot this weekend I will do the install this weekend. Look for a set of 4:10s and 3:55s for sale in the classified section soon. GA
