Empty Tuner?

OK, I have been looking for a tuner, and finally talked to the only local shp with a dyno. Below is his response. My question is, does it make sense? Can I order a tuner empty? Is this a good move?

Quote:
You can buy the Xcalibrator2 in two versions:
1) Loaded with stock SCT files that the user (you) can change,
2) Empty, the new tune file will be loaded in depending on its behaviour on the dyno (that's me)

I have ALL files for SCT products, I am one of the very few select "exclusive" dealers, I have the latest and the greatest

However I do not recommend "custom tune" files over the phone without the use of a dyno. I call them "teletune" and they can be destructive.

If you don't have any major mods, you can get away with option 1 (I still would recommend a check on the dyno). Otherwise option 2 is the way to go.

yeah he seems to be right why would you want an empty tuner without a dyno to tune it on you just going to guess at the air fuel and spark at different rpms that probably would lead to a lot of detonation this aint like the old days of turning your distributor till it pings then back it off a bit there are a lot of sensors that have to be happy sct spends probably weeks or months on a dyno tuning for cars with engin safty and power in mind if you want diffrent you have to tune on a dyno to set it to your car its like a penutbutter and jelly sandwich everybody wants one so id make them with creamy if you want crunchy you need to go to the store and find the right crunchy for you

Thanks for responding, but can you please use some punctuation? And I am new to this, so your post confused me even more.

Your tuner is right and seems allright!

The first tunes he talkes about is what SCT have worked out for your car, probably a 87, 91 and 93 tune. They are all safe, and hence safe to use and will give you some 15-20 HP, and more noticable better throttle response.

The custom tune on the dyno will render some more power, you'll KNOW your air/fuel mixture and KNOW it is safe. In addition he'll prolly change the rev and tq limitors to be more 'acceptable' to playting around, getting more outa the car.

I'd spring for the custom/dyno tune. I'd also get a CAI at the same time for max effect and to not have to retune soon again when you realize you want one...

A great inbetween is a CAI tuner combo with a safe 'custom' tune, not done with your car on the dyno but for your car and CAI. Many like the C&L and me and many others use the Tunable Inductions unit which (if you ask me) is the best one out there, it's also the MOST priceworty one (~$200 less than the C&L for example...)

PS. Ken with MD is the guy you have seen in the magazines and is one of the best tuners around. I'm sure your tuner know about him... He too is a exclusive tuner with all the latest software from SCT and often some new test software. He is one of the go to guys for SCT for help and ideas...

KJ, poorer but happier
