Currently Ford makes it money off the Explorer, the Trucks and the Mustang (and the fact they have a nice contract for police interceptors). So, yes, it is possible that one line of an automakers inventory could make the difference for that particular manufacturer.
They almost killed the Mustang back in the 80's, I used to do field work at the plant in Dearborn and the workers were talking about it. They just don't have the profit margin on the Mustang that they do on the trucks, with the F150 being their biggest seller.

Do you have a price quote? my dealer said it's going to be around 65K MSRP.

I agree that hands down the Ford Truck (F150) is Fors's best seller. Again, I agree the trucks have more profit margin. I read a report not too long ago saying that the Mustang has always been a bottom line car for Ford. I of course can not verify such, just going by a report a read not too long ago.

Again, you are right, back in the early 80's there was talk about killing off the Mustang and again in the late 80's/early 90's, for the Probe was supposed to be the Mustang's replacment. Also, if I am not mistaken, there are actually one or two years in the late 70's that Ford did not make a Mustang at all. Hopefully someone out there can confirm that.

I think that about 375,000 F150's are built and about 175,000 Mustangs.
