super/turbo is here!

usually by the time i think of something new, someone has already began working on it - like in circa 1995 when i thought about a little widget that would be the MP3 player

So if turbo's suffer from lag and S/C's suffer from parasitic loss, how about a belt driven centri S/C|turbo combo?!?!?!

The pulley on the unit would have a built-in clutch that disengages at about 2-3k engine rpm at which point 2 things happen: 1) the pulley spins freely, 2) exhaust spins the impeller enough to create desired boost level.

Now back to my first comment, who might be working on such a thing? Well...

Re: super/turbo is here!

I remember seeing in a recent issue of the SAE magazine that VW (I think) was working on a super small displacement engine ( like 1L) running a combined system like that in order to have decent power and high mileage. Cool idea.

Re: super/turbo is here!

I think what he is missing is the Vortech and such superchargers have not only pulley ratio to spin them faster than the Engine, but also internal gearing.

I think it could work, and I agree with a statememnt on the site that a pneumatic clutch would probably be best for engagement/diesngagement.

I think the on/off RPM would have to be taylored to each individual Engine and Turbo Combination. Though, its an interesting read. The RX-7 used a sequential Turbo System on their Twin Turbo... one fed the other.

There was a version of the RX-7 that used two turbos, but it was very expensive, diabolically complex, and not very reliable. I'm not sure how it worked, but I think there was a lot more to it. Very effective when it worked, but supposedly parts are near impossible to find for it.

Yea, THe last generation RX-7 are Twin Turbos. They used two samll turbos because the rotatry has a very small displacement and this helped with the lag of not havign huge air mass moving at low RPMs.

As far as I know all of the last generation RX7 Turbo's were this way.
