Pony motivation on the golf course
So I'm playing 9 holes with my son last Saturday, coming down with a cold and my swing is just fer scheise.
I HATE finishing a round on a bad note. What's needed here is some motivation...
I say to my son, "We need to each describe something that we really want, and then promise ourselves to get it if we play these last two holes in the score that we name."
He agrees. His thing is an XBox 360 and he will get it if he goes even par.
My thing is an '06 GT, the Legend Limer I've been following online at the dealership down in Richmond where I married Dixi. My target is one under.
All of a sudden my head is very focused. Smoke a three wood, full PW to 20 feet, but miss the downhiller badly and have to jam in a five footer coming back for par.
OK. Last hole. Par 3, elevated tee over water, 116 yards, pin on the upper shelf. The PW felt good last hole. So go with it again, fool. Catch it nice, it's tracking, it's tracking, IT'S TRACKING -- thump, three feet past the hole, and that sucker BACKS UP to an inch.
I'm running off the tee box, laughing. Played golf forty four years and still haven't had an ace yet. That was as close as I've ever come.
Son went two over and missed his goal.
And I haven't bought that GT, yet.
Never, ever underestimate the power of the mind in athletics -- or the power of the Pony as motivation!:eyepoppin
