Mustang 2007 P0446 EVAP error

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, been driving my Mustang for a few years now and enjoyed it. It's running well, but I have had one problem for some time that I finally want to fix.

It's a (rather classical, from what I understand) P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction. Firestone tells me they want to run a smoke test for $99, but given what I found on the internet I don't think it's gonna reveal the problem. So I want to check if I can do it myself. I did a lot of googling already, but nothing seemed to match exactly my case.

Some info:
It's a 2007 V6
P0446 is the only error code
I haven't noticed any problems other than the check engine light, which is why I haven't fixed it yet

Who can help me narrow it down?
I read to check the fuel filler cap, but I don't see anything wrong with it.
Easiest part to replace by myself is probably the vapor canister purge valve - good idea?

Most times there's an issue with the gas cap not sealing/venting properly. Some GM cars will do this if the owner installs an aftermarket locking gas cap.

So buy a new gas cap, reset the error and check that it doesn't reappear?

Actually, I went to AutoZone and had them read the error codes again, and their system suggested to replace the Vent Solenoid, which was on my list as well. So I replaced it today, and it got rid of the problem. The check light did not reappear.
