Supercharged 5.0 or GT500?

For the guys who went the supercharged route why not get the GT500? Are there any advantages to supercharging a 5.0 over a GT500 motor?

Im very happy with my car with tune/CAI/ORX but I know there isnt much to do after this that has a good enough return to investment to me except a supercharger so Ive been toying around with the idea of supercharging or trading in for a GT500. Arent the GT500 also supposed to change for 2013?

My concerns are that a supercharged 5.0 motor will not last nearly as long as a GT500 motor.

well the 5.4 has forged pistons/rods being its major advantage...not to mention that 6spd in the 5.0 is questionable

Hmmm.... I thought the 5.0 had a forged crank and rods...

Anyway, I would go GT500 all day. Better transmission, fuel system, wheels and tires, all of those things just add up to the GT500 being a better car, especially for a supercharged application.

I think the 5.0 still has the cast crank and the rods are forged powdered metal. They are kind of limited in output. The GT-500 is good for way over 600hp safely. Super Snake gets 750hp but no warrenty.

our 5.0 can handle some boost but it wasn't designed for it; the 5.4 in the GT500 is. i vote GT500 also because you get a new car warranty with it...supercharging the 5.0 is a major roll of the dice at this point IMO. we are still guinea pig status with this engine.

GT500 also has a different transmission...i am hesitant to call it "better" at this point just because of all the sticky's of the SVT guys having synchros issues and inability to get into 2nd gear when rpms raise and stuff like that. i think that transmission has some kinks to work out but theoretically it will be able to support all the power very well.

My research and opinion.

If you are true mustang fan, then GT500. GT500 rated at 550hp for $60k or less, the SS gt500 750hp for under $100k. Otherwise, better value putting that kind of money toward a porsche/vette.

But, if you want bang for the bucks then it's the 5.0. You can get a supercharged 5.0 550-600hp under $45k.

For me it was the value. Can't beat getting vette/porsche performance for under $45k on a new vehicle.

The crank is forged steel but you are correct about the powdered forged steel rods. Of all of the forged high HP rotating assemblies available right now, nearly all are rods/pistons only.

If I were going big HP(money), I would stick with the 5.0 due to RPM abilities. I would also upgrade everything else at the same time, trans, rearend, suspension, etc, as I would on the GT500 anyway.

That's pretty absurd.

It's a money issue for a lot of people, not how "true" of a mustang fan they are. They buy what they can afford, then improve it later for less money.

Well did some research. Trade in for my car KBB is $27000. Low mileage 2011 GT500 is about $50,000. Add tax and its about $53000. Thats a difference of $26000.

Figure supercharger plus install about $6-7000. Any supporting mods such as wider tires, clutch, etc. and total maybe around $10k. Still $16000 less than a GT500. :kooky:

If it was stock than maybe but Ive already put about $2k in mods to my car so Id lose out on that to.

One can still dream I guess

My decision factors for going with blower on the GT;

Candy Red not available in GT500
Automatic not available in GT500, yes I like the auto...
GT500 twice the price, even if I got out of my GT clean my payment would double.
Blower on the GT would have similar or more power, and get better MPG.

The big negative for the GT is the lack of warranty unless you go with FRPP, Roush, or Edelbrock warrantable (lower powered) configurations. Plus, it still is just a GT with a blower versus a GT500.

To a lessser degree this would be my daily driver and it seems a shame to put all those miles on a GT500.

In the end I just could not overcome doubling the payment.

If I had the money I would go for the GT500, but I have to say that I also love the new 5.0!
At the end it's always a question about money...

How does buying a GT500 make you more of a "true Mustang fan" more than buying a GT?

The same way buying a GT over a V6 makes you more of a Mustang fan

Not the way I feel.. but that's the only place that old and tired argument leads.

My guess is.. that most "mustang fans" can neither afford a GT.. let alone a 500.. so it's more about what you can afford.

Cheaper to go faster in the GT...hard to believe but it's just true at this point. The new 2013 GT500 may change that but today it's just the truth.
