Tunes and Summer Heat - back the tune down?

We're hitting 100+ in Texas now and wondering since ambient heat certainly contributes to detonation, if you any of you back your tune down to be safe during the heat of summer.

I'm running the 93 Race tune on 93 octane and have never heard any detonation, but to be safe wondering if I should back down to the 91 or 89 octane tune.

I've been checking my plugs and they look fine, but just thought I'd bring up the topic since I didn't find an existing thread.

if you plan on beating the snot out of the car, then yes Id prolly run the less aggressive tune, but sometimes a little restaint when its super hot out is your best bet

If your worried, run the 91 tune with 93 octane, or back off the ignition, or run some torco.....

Short shift and let the ricers burn their crap up instead. You don't need to be stranded on the side of the road.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm going to datalog to see if I have any detonation at all. I'm just curious.

I do take it easy for sure. Thanks for the input.

bama 93 race tunes are already nice and rich.. mine is 0.84 lambda tapering down to 0.82 between 5500 and 6500 rpm.. then holding 0.82. zero knock sensor readings.

Higher octane fuel is more resistant to detonation - if you are worried about it, run a 91 tune with 93 octane gas, or 87 tune with 89, whatever.

I ran my best times ever in the South Louisiana heat about a month ago. I beat on my car daily and don't hear a peep of detonation. Of course, I have an AED tune...not a McTune. So, YMMV.

Get a tune from someone who knows what they are doing and gives you personal attention and your car is no more prone to failure than a stock Ford tune. Use a "million tunes sold" tuner, and take your chances.

I am not trying to be an ass, I am just trying to impart a little wisdom here. I know whose tunes most guys on this site run, and I know why you run them. But, in the end it all goes back to Tommy Boy.

I have the Ford Racing Tune and when it's very hot like it has been for the last couple of weeks I get the infamous ping. I've decided just to back off a little bit when it's very hot. Kind of sucks and is definitely frustrating.

I also have the FRPP tune. I experienced some ping when I first got it in march. Now, even with 90 degree days, it's running like a champ. No pinging, plenty of WOT. I installed the JLT oil separator, maybe that's helping. Or maybe the summer gas in my area really is better.

Doing exactly the same thing; Bama 91 tune on 93 octane. 104 today, and it runs beautifully.

Car has an IAT table and retards timing as temp goes up. So unless your tuner jacks all that up you don't need to do anything.
