Up until a few years ago MTs had better fuel mileage than ATs. I'm not sure what precipitated the change, but shift strategy plays a huge role in MPGs. It is possible that modern ATs have had their shift strategy tuned to a point that allows for better MPGs. Also, I think modern ATs are just much better designed and engineered than in the past.
