5.0 BBQ Tick Insurance?

I have been following the BBQ Tick issue in great detail.

Been running the recommended Ford semi synthetic motor oil since I bought this car at 6,900 miles.

Before taking a recent 400 mile romp across the state and back, I added 2 ounces of Red Line 81403 Break-in Oil Additive with Zinc - (comes in a 16 oz. bottle)

While I have no means to prove this, and it may all be in my mind, this engine SEEMS to be running now with no valve train noise whatsoever.

This MAY BE a means to address a REAL tick issue for others.

I did it on mine for "Tick Insurance" I see no downside to it and while my results may be real or imagined, someone with a genuine tick issue may benefit from this.

Waddyathink?

I had heard that zinc additives made the tick go away, but I also heard that zinc is really bad for the cats. Truth or myth?

I don't believe the 2 ounces I added will have an effect on the catalytic converter.

Additionally, it is my understanding that as part of the emissions package, the CATS are covered by the emissions warranty, 8 years/80,000 miles.

By the way, we just chased the car to North Carolina and Virginia. There are now well over 2000 miles on her since adding the 2 ounces of Redline, and she continues to purr silently.

Unless I can be convinced otherwise, based on these results I intend to continue to add 2 ounces to the crankcase immediately after every oil change going forward.

I will second Hyperlube. It uses Ketjenlube 135 instead of zinc. I put it in my car at 3000 miles (6000 now). Motor is quiet. Will use it as long as I own the car. Cheap $20 extra per oil change insurance.

You can get Hyperlube at the auto parts store, and you want the bottle that says ZINC replacement on it, NOT the large bottle that says for older cars.you will know what I mean when you see the product,I also only use 5W30 Mobil 1, NO 5W20 in my engine.

Thank you. I have a 2014 with track pack and had first oil change at 9100 miles at the dealer. They used the specified 5w50 motor craft full synthetic and I developed a "tick" right after. It went away at about 16k miles. Up for an oil change again soon but am concerned the tick will return. Maybe using 5w30 would be a good idea.
