Needs to be the same PCM code, year and option configuration to work.
Like I said, you can buy a used, unlocked SCT X3 for about $100 and then just seek the tuner of your choice and buy an email tune from them. Prices range from 100 bucks on the low end to 450 on the high end. You just load that tune onto your X3 via your computer and SCT's device updater software, then install the tune on your car.
Or you can just pony up and buy a new X4 from the tuner of your choice and it'll come preloaded with the tunes you ask for. price for that seems to market out at around $400. The X4 is a way better tuner box than the X3 but, if you're just into loading tunes and do minimal datalogging, the old X3 is fine. I always did datalogging on my X3 with a laptop and used the X3 as a pass through device. Way easier.
