Tremec T56 Magnum XL gear ratio

So my MT-82 died and I'm looking at ordering a new Tremec T56 Magnum XL for my car. The only question I have is what gears ratio I should get. I have 3.73 in the back and I need to know if I should get a 2.66 first or 2.97 first. It's a daily driver that I do have some fun with occasionally. I want it to still be really fast on the top end, but get out of the hole fast as well.

I'd get the 2.97. Otherwise the gear spacing with the 2.66 is way too far apart.

You'll miss the MT-82 ratios. Even with the 3.73's.

I thought the 2.66 is the close ratio? The only concern I have with the 2.97 is that the 1st gear is nearly non-existent.

No. The 2.66 has much wider spacing. Although they both have a 1:1 4th gear.

Notice the ratios? If you go with the 2.66 first, it'll be like the MT-82's 2nd gear, and the T-56's 2nd gear will be like the MT-82's 3rd gear.

Not good IMO, unless you're making some crazy horsepower (FI), you'll probably be slower than before. Not good.

The 2.97 looks just right with the 3.73's.

Your MT-82 is a 3.66 first gear. You'll be dropping down a whopping 20% to a 2.97.

So what about if I plan on putting on a supercharger in the future? Should I still go with the 2.97?

I have the Tremec Magnum XL with 4:10s and a supercharger.
I chose the lower ratio 2.97 first etc., in other words, the lowest geared XL, meaning higher numbers.

Yes, you will really miss the 4th gear pull of the MT82.

I switched to 4:10s from my 3:73s in order to get closer to the numbers of the first gear of the MT82 with 3:73s.
You'll see what I mean right after you put the Tremec in but didn't put in 4:10s.

OK, the bad news is that the Magnum XL with 4:10s is not quite as quick as the MT82/3:73s is. But it's close
The good news is the shifting is wonderful and I'm more "streetable " with the Magnum XL/4:10s.

In hind sight, the Magnum XL with 4:10s was a good move.
BTW, the 2.97 first gear with 4:10s is way more useful than the MT82 with 3:73s.

.Be aware that I had some complications along the way having the conversion done, but it all worked out.

I also put on an MGW shifter. The standard Tremec Magnum XL is a long throw IMO.

Awesome. I'll go with the 2.97 right now. I live right near MGW, so they are making me one and I'll pick it up Friday. I have an MGW in my MT-82 and I love it. I'll probably end up putting 4.10s in my car. Does it kill gas mileage and top speed though?

My fuel mileage is the same, maybe a tenth or two better.

Top speed? I have not done anywhere close to top speed capabilities.

As far as my saying the Tremec's 1st gear 2.97 with the 4:10s is more useful than the MT82/3:73s, the first time you are tooling around a parking lot, you'll see what I mean. There used to be times I was going slow in a parking lot and I had to figure if I wanted to stay in first at high RPMs, or go to second.
I don't have that problem anymore, I stay in first and the engine isn't screaming.

Yeah, that first parking lot you go to will tell the tale of a once again useful first gear.

Another member Kona stang10 did the conversion. Check out his signature below, see the 4:10s and the supercharger? He's doing 72 ft lbs more torque than I am.

Here is some math for you from that old thread.
It shows rear end gears and the MPH at redline.
I mean, theoretically, you could do 4:30s, and it would closely match the MT82/3:73s for gears 1-3.

If you look closely, the reality is that you will see the Tremec XL (2.97 type) with 4:10s is really closest to an MT82 with 3:55s.
That's why I say I am more streetable and shift less than I used to.
