Sorry I'm slow to know but what is rowing a boat mean?

A guy passed me and leaned out his window to show me him rowing a boat... what's this about?

He was probably just trying to get you to laugh, and essentially saying that his car was so slow he was trying to 'row faster' to make it go.

Back in the 80s, I was passenger in a little economy car out in the flint hills of Kansas. As we were going up hills, the cheap little piece-of-junk car we were in couldn't hold speed, so the guy next to us would pass us. As we crested the hill, we'd pass him again on the way down (two lanes going one way).

About the third time he went by us, I pretended that I was "Fred Flintstoning" our car - running in place, pumping my arms furiously. As he glanced my way I "wiped off sweat", smiled and waved. The poor guy was laughing so hard he nearly swerved off the road.

I bet this is much the same thing in some way. I've seen a couple of Youtube videos where guys passed other people, rowing furiously. =)

I smile a lot. It makes people wonder what I'm up to...

I'm pretty sure it's how European guys show they are interested in you. Don't be all weirded out or anything. Just take it as a compliment and go about your day. As long as you didn't accidentally give him the full speed ahead signal by giving him the thumbs up. You didn't, did you?

Don't worry. Even if you did, you can just change your license plate and all is well. And move to another city. Of course you have to move as well. No biggie.

Oops, just re-read your comment. I thought you said......well, don't worry what I thought I read. Please just disregard the above.

All the best to you.

LOL, that's my take. If you are passing another driver who is making rowing motions, it means he's trying but nothing helps. If the driver passing you is making rowing motions, they are saying "You need to row that boat harder". It's a good natured way of communicating the phrase "slower than frozen peanut butter". Just apply it to the loser, smile and get on with life.

I always just assume they are being silly whenever they make gestures and friendly when they honk. When I hear someone honk, I imagine the horn button is as large as their steering wheel and it was them trying to turn. I saw a truck the other day that said Bighorn on the back and the kids and I laughed about his big horn button for quite a while.

I was at a light and when it turned green, I started to move slowly through a left turn, but not fast enough for the guy behind me so he honked and as he passed he "showed me what his IQ number was" according to my daughter.

George Carlin said, when you are driving, everyone driving slower is an idiot and everyone driving faster is a maniac.

To me everyone is just trying their best and some do better than others and need some allowances and to be able to move in front of you so they can stop 12 feet farther up than you do. I always let those in a hurry go ahead and hope I don't find them in a ditch around the next corner.

It's a way of intimating he feels like he's on the "Slow Boat, to China".
