Recently been getting this smell of someone with a perm done... but it's the AC

I tested this and the smell only happens when the AC is on. I will accelerate then the smell comes. Is it the AC running low or overworked? Now that I think of it, just got a replacement manual transmission but the smell happens on circulation too, so any outside odor shouldn't come in.

A perm smells like hydrogen, so does an exhaust leak downstream of the cats right where it gets disconnected to replace a transmission.

My car has been sounding louder since the replacement... but how would the smell get into the car with circulation on? Smells like from skunks and cigarettes don't enter the car...

cars are not all that air tight. Neither is the AC duct work. Exhaust leaks travel with you, cigarette smoking skunks don't. Anyway, it's just a suggestion for something to check for.

I hope Dana left out a work in his description of the smell you're getting. The last time I smelled hydrogen was just before I got off of the Hindenberg. I'd check for a minor coolant leak in the heater box. Hot antifreeze has a distinct odor.

Well, I think the most logical was the mold idea cause like I said, the smell ONLY happens when the AC is on... It wouldn't be the coolant cause I know that smell, I've had Exhaust leaks in other cars before and never smelled this smell... The ONLY time I have smelled this odor was back when my mother used to get her hair permed...

P.S. Admins, my "Quick reply" button won't work still on my PC... have to go "Advanced" to reply... but it's fine on my phone in mobile version...

Cheez! OK chem nerds. PURE hydrogen has no smell at all. Cats don't smell quite as much like rotten eggs as they did 20 years ago, so maybe that's not the issue. Engine coolant, polyethylene glycol, doesn't smell anything like a beauty shop to me. Maybe there is a natural gas leak near where you park your car.
