Does VIN indicate gear ratio

A while back, several owners of the 2011 5.0 were sure that the VIN had a code for the 3.31, 3.55 or the 3.73 rear gear. Does anyone know if the VIN has a code for which gear is in the 2012 car?

Old Chuck, I don't think it does?

There is a pretty active thread here somewhere that covers this topic, and I think what I got out of it was the only way to tell for sure was to crawl under the vehicle and check the label on the differential housing.

Also, if memory serves me there is a code on the while label on the door jamb that also iniicates it, but you have to have the official Ford Secret Decoder Ring to cross-check the code!

I am sure someone will front me out if I am wrong in my recollections though...

run the vin on the window sticker generator and it will tell you if the car came with the optional rear end gear. Untitled Page

Thanks. Storm75, I too remember that thread and you are right, It was the sticker on the door jam. I have my window sticker and it says 3.55 but a friend asked me how else could you tell and I was wondering if anyone had the secret decoder ring for the door jam numbers. Thanks aldocella1 for the info...

32V, I have looked on mine and it does say 3.55 the same as on the window sticker. Was just wondering as a friend did not have have a sticker on his diff and could not get it up on a ramp to turn the wheels to count the rotations so he was wondering if Ford coded it anywhere else. I, as well as others, seem to remember a thread some time ago where some members claimed it was coded on the jam sticker and was trying to find an answer to a friend's question.
Thanks for all the help....

It's coded on the "Axle" box on the door jamb sticker. It is not coded in the VIN

I think the answer to the $64,000 question is;

3.31 = ?
3.55 = ?
3.73 = ?

I will look on the wife's door jam when she gets home from work, I know she's got the base 3.31s on her GT.

  • DD - 3.55 ratio with manual transmission
  • GG - 3.31 ratio with automatic transmission

So, 3.31s do not come with a manual transmission?

The list I posted was "as printed" in my source.

What is actually available depends where you are and on what you're ordering.

In the US the 3.31 is available on the V6 manual (and automatic) as an option and is standard on the GT.

In Canada the 3.31 is standard on the V6 Premium, both the manual and automatic.
