Met up with a Lightening

I got beside a Ford Lightning pickup at a light this evening. Had a short chat with the young guy and his girl. When the light changed we booted it. That thing surprized me. All i heard was the supercharger winding up and he stayed right with me through three gears. We had to back off, it was a city street in traffic. Had to turn off, never got to ask him if it was stock. All I know is it was faster than I thought it was. Any experience with those lightning trucks ?

PS. for clarification, Im running a 5.0. CAI, 94 tune,Aluminum driveshaft, Corsa mufflers and 3:73 gears.

Today I parked next to one at Lowes . If it wasn't for the emblems I'd never would of known it was a Lightning .Too plain Jane for me .

I've had two, and they are Lightnings not Lightenings...

My '99 ran a 13.58 @ 102 stone stock and ran a 12.40 @ 107 with a 4lb. pulley upgrade and a tune and CAI on slicks.

We have had street driven Lightnings in our club that would run low 10's.

Pretty amazing for a big brick that weighs almost 5000 pounds.

My current Lightning is a 1994 model first generation, they weren't supercharged. Has a 351W and it runs in the 14.70 range @ about 96.

I realized it was "Lightning" after I typed it lol. Anyways, yes that thing was a lot faster than I had imagined. Again, stock or not, I dont know what it was. but it did haul ass.

Uhh, what i do know that isnt already commonly known or can be easly dug up by google is that the motor in that thing is the same one on the 2005-2006 Ford GT. A little modded for extra performance but mostly the same.

So yeah, that thing in a straight line is no joke.
The Ford GT (SCed 500-550hp) is epic all around. . .
Im not sure on what year Lightning pick up truck that was used though.

Uhh, well Sir, you don't know as much as you think I'm afraid.

The motor in the 99-04 Lightning only shares the same bore and stroke as the one in the Ford GT, other than that there is almost nothing else that is the same.

The motor in the Lightning is basically a beefed up iron block 5.4 like was used in any Ford truck of the same time period. Beefed up with forged low compression pistons and beefier connecting rods to handle the 8 psi of boost. They also used different cams but other than that they weren't much different.

The Ford GT uses an all-aluminum dry sump DOHC 5.4 whereas the engine in the Lightning is an iron block wet sump SOHC engine. They are NOT the same! 380hp vs 550hp, close in architecture but no cigar.

YouTube - ‪Ford GT40 challenge pt 1 - Top Gear - BBC‬‏

Im sry, i thought it was the whole engine. Mr. Clarkson said it was just the Block lol at 4:31. What tossed me off was when he said "is pretty much the same engine as in the lightning pick up truck".

Maybe Jermy Clarkson has no idea what hes talking about LOL.

Edit: Funny thing about Mr. Clarkson is that he would probably tell you the same thing.

In clarksons mind they are the same because they are both the same displacement and both had Eaton superchargers.

Over on the Truck site I used to moderate on there were quite a few that were running in the 11's with minor modifications, and there were a couple that were doing good on road courses as well. Lightning are not to be taken lightly
