Need help with 2012 Base steering wheel swap!

I have a base 2012 V6 convertible with the cheap plastic steering wheel. I have a new 2011-2012 Premium leather wheel. I brought it to my local Ford dealership to be put on and they said they could not get it to work. Now I know that the radio controls won't work. I have an aftermarket head unit so I don't care. They told me the cruise control didn't work. They said that my steering wheel was a 6 pin and that the Premium one was an 8 pin. From all the research I have done it should have been a plug and play for the cruise control. Are they feeding me a line or are the steering wheels not plug and play?

I can only tell you that it worked with no problems on my 2012 GT. I have no idea about the V-6.

You should have done it yourself, it takes about 15 minutes.

All 2010+ steering wheels are compatible. Premium, GT500, Boss302

Cruise control should work out of the box. Audio controls can work if you know someone with a Ford IDS tool.

It will will not work out of the box if you use a 2005 - 2009 steering wheel. To use a 2005 - 2009 steering wheel you have to swap the buttons over.

I had a similar issue on my 2011 V6 base model. The pin connector for the cruise control on the plastic steering wheel has four wires. The GT500 wheels have two rows of pins on their connector. I purchased a 2009 SVT leather steering wheel on ebay for $300.00, and swapped the pin connector from my plastic steering wheel over to the leather wrapped steering wheel. I did not see the need for controls that I would never be able to use, so I never ordered the GT500 steering wheel, which was more expensive than my 2009 SVT Wheel.

I wrote up a how-to on V6mustangperformance.com. Here is the link to that how-to

I have a base v6, and I've swapped from the base wheel to the premium(18R fleet /w no sync buttons), and to the Boss. I had no connector incompatibility issues. Toughest thing about the swap was that large bolt, because I didn't have the proper size socket for my wrench.

Heck with that... I'm wondering if I can put a Mustang wheel (and the idiot airbag) in my 2006 Crown Vic Interceptor!

Or, you can change the switch harness...

Thanks,
I read that article this afternoon and seems to be straight forward enough. Who owns that website. It is very informative!

It should work. I did a write up as well. I am on my iPad so I don't want to hassle with posting the link but you can do a search and it'll come right up. Good luck!
