HID's in reflectors increase their blinding power on foggy, rainy snowy days/nights... they will literally blind oncoming traffic with the stray bounced light spilling all over the road, personally I don't understand why people that install HID's in reflectors think it's a cool mod... basically, you're advertising what a moron you are without any concern toward other drivers on the road.
HID's installed in PROJECTORS on the other hand create a defined cut off point,as the pic in the above post shows... no one seems to have issues with those, but then most are OEM.

Agreed. Putting HID bulbs in halogen reflectors is just moronic.

I love my retrofitted HIDs:

Wow,upper cut off light beam on the garage door is a beautiful thing!!!
Wish mine had HID's, I like the intensity and color, but I'm stuck with halogens, which I really don't mind... how hard was the conversion/ cost? just curious.

I had Kris from HID Retrofit Lights convert Raxioms to real HID projectors and delete the LEDs.

If I had to do it over again I would have done the OEM halogens, but I'm happy nonetheless. Here's the link to the install and price:

Hey! It's those morons that help keep the accessory section of Pep Boys and Autozone afloat!

HID's are illegal in reflector housing as far as know because they blind the EFF out of everyone on the road ! And every time i see a D-bag with HID's in reflectors i how he/she will get pulled over for them !
Especially those SUV's and lifted to the sky pick-up trucks !

I have never heard of a fire being caused by a poor install...yet. But as mentioned, wire that is too small will heat up if you draw more current through it than was originally intended. And you can be sure that car manufacturers use the smallest AWG they can get away with since it saves weight and cost. Copper is getting pricey.

But more than likely they were probably just hoping you were a douche and would fail the idiot test and run, or have a warrant, etc...
