I am thinking of getting some 3.73 gears for my 14 Mustang V6. It currently has 2.73s in it. I run the automatic.
The above link shows some gears for the 8.8 rear end. Are the ones above correct for my car, being 30 spline? Im not sure what my 8.8 uses. My other option is to get the Ford Motorsport gears for a little more money. I can get the Yukon gears at my workplace with staff discount. Are Yukon gears any good or should I just stick with the Ford ones?
Any thing needed to know to installing gears in my car? What do I do about the computer and setting it for 3.73s? Im assuming the speedo is the only worry when it comes to the computer and which gears you are using?
I am not sure about the spline but pretty sure it is the "standard" 8.8 rear end, maybe someone else can chime in with specifics on that.
Some considerations about the swap:
> 2.73 to 3.73 is a huge change; you might want to do the math to see how that will affect the RPM's and maybe consider something in between like 3.55 or 3.31
> 3.73 gears tend to whine if not set up perfectly, and even when set up perfectly some sets seem to whine
> the FRPP gear sets are supposedly the "best" but even they can whine
> yes the speedo will need to be be recallibrated with a tuner or it will be way off; most tuners have user adjustable parameter for rear gear ratio and I think that is all that needs to be corrected but not sure for an automatic transmission
EDIT/PS: installation should be left to professionals, unless you really know what you are doing
I ordered my 2011 v6 with the 3.31 gear ratio. This should be the standard gear ratio. It wasn't enough for me so I had my Local Ford dealer install my Ford Racing (Ford Performance now) 3.73 gears. I love them. My last car was a 4 cylinder Dodge and at 60 MPH it would be doing 2,250 rpm. With the 3.73 gears on my automatic v6 Mustang, 60 MPH is around 2,000 rpm. I paid $550 just for the labor, I ordered the gears from American Muscle. This was back when they were a good place to buy from
I believe my car was a rental car at the beginning of its life. It came with the Pony package, yet a lot of the features from that package were deleted from my car when ordered. My VIN info states I have 2.73s in the back. My rear whines a little even with the stock gears. I have heard the 3.73s were the sweet spot for the V6. I know gas mileage goes down when using these, but I only fill up once a month anyway. So gas mileage is not a concern all that much. I was debating to get the MPT 93 and 87 tunes. Im told these tunes are really the only way to recalibrate the gear swap for the speedo. I have a set of Motorsport GT500 axle backs in my car as well. K&N filter at the engine. So all this are minor mods, but should wake the car up. I can't even break my wheels loose with the 6 speed automatic. I keep getting traction. I dont know how much the 2.73s are causing that problem. Im not planning to put a ton of money into this car, as in a couple years, I'd like to trade up for a 2020 5.0L Premium.
. . . . I was debating to get the MPT 93 and 87 tunes. Im told these tunes are really the only way to recalibrate the gear swap for the speedo. . . . . .
pretty much any tune/tuner can be used to correct the rear end ratio; it is one of the user-adjustable parameters in most tuner devices, unless it has been "locked out" by the person who programmed the tuner
I know the 13-14 v6 automatics were programed to not be able to do 'brake stand' burnouts . My 2011 didn't have this. Most of us with a v6 use MPT tunes, I do. Bamba and Steeda make pretty good tunes also. When I load my tune I can change to the rear end ratio plus revolutions per mile of the tire size so the speedometer will be right. I know I've said this before but. With just a tune, it took off a half of a second from my 0 to 60 times when my Mustang was 100% factory stock
Not planning on spending too much money, but willing to swap out the ring/pin??? Ok. Ha. You'll keep spending once you do the swap and see what that car's potential can be. Yukon's not bad, I got the Ford Racing ring/pin and Motive Gear bearings/shims.
I agree that the 3.55 ratio is the best all around, but the most fun is 3.73.
I'm assuming you have a press-you'll need one for the installation..a dial indicator, and yes, a speedo recal tuner. Private shop install is 4-6 hours, sooo…$400 is reasonable and $600 is on the high end. THIS IS NOT A JOB FOR THE "PARTS CHANGER", you'll want a mechanic doing this install. I waited to replace my diff along with the ring/pin, then said "hell, why not just do the cover too?!", but then again, I totally beefed up the sway bars/shocks/struts, and the last thing I want to do is fry the diff AFTER redoing the ring/pin.
I am still going to do 3.55's if the 3.31 take a dump, best all around gear for a street car on the road cource. That and since my little V6 still has a slight traction problem 3.73 will not help with that at all.
FWIW, i rebuilt the 8.25 under my 68 Barracuda with 3.55 Yukon gears about 80k miles ago. They were and are quiet. They were also easy to set up and got a perfect pattern on the first try.
With a 2013 V6 auto I am going to be swapping the 2.73s for 4.10s because so far through my homework on the matter I have learned that an automatic transmission torque converter inherently slips and it can handle the 4.10s.. and at highway speeds reach about 2500rpm in 6th gear.
Yes.. that is significantly higher than with 2.73s... 90% of my driving is "city" anyways. Plus IMO the cost of the seat of my pants low end torque feel in a V6 at the cost of more fuel is a price I'm willing to pay.
Unless of course someone here wiser (by first hand experience) can educate me on something I'm not considering or corrects my learning up to this point?
Otherwise that's what I'm probably going with because I believe we all agree that Mustang is an American sports car.. so shouldn't it drive and be maintained as one?
