Anyone know how hard it would be to add the Auto headlights option to a V6 Premium? This is driving the wife and I NUTS. I still cannot believe it did not come with it. I would think most of the stuff is there already???
i feel if you go to your dealer they will install it. it might be a lil pricey now that it is after the fact bbut it is def worth it cause i have it on my v6 and couldnt be any happier
BEST $20 I've ever spent! The switch was spot-on!! Took only 3 minutes to pop out the old switch, and put in the new one. Works like a champ. No more remembering/forgetting to switch the lights on during dusk/dawn (I was spoiled with my last car.) :shigrin
The SW-6659 part did add auto headlights for us. Pretty simple install. There are two screws holding on a cover below the steering wheel. That cover covers the single screw holding on the headlight switch housing. After you remove the screws to the cover, there are two "clips" that release if you pull on the cover. I did NOT completely remove the cover, just enough to get to the single screw that holds the switch housing. Take that screw out and unplug one electrical connector and the original switch can be removed. You have to depress 3 fingers on the old switch so it can be removed thru the front of the housing. They can be depressed one at a time as long as you don't let one you already pushed thru snap back while you are doing the next one. Oh, the "screws" (term used in the service manual) are 7mm hex heads.
Great upgrade for just a few bucks. Thanks to the one who posted the part number.
BTW, when you unplug the original switch, the headlights come on, so don't plan to go to lunch between that and plugging in the new switch.
I think I replaced mine the not-so-correct way by getting a very thin philips in there, and wedged the thing out without unscrewing anything.
However, I DO have the fog light kit sitting right here next to me, and with that, I have a spare headlight switch. I'm willing to sell one for $20 shipped if anyone wants to do the auto-headlight mod. :bigthumbsup
I'll be installing my foglights either tomorrow or saturday. Along with a few other things (purchased a sub, and some decals!) :bounce2:
Just installed the auto-headlight switch very easy to install and the steps do work. I have mine on about a 3-4 second delay

Copied this from another thread on how to get the auto lights to function.
NOTE: The time delay can be programmed through the message center using the message center buttons (if equipped) or using the following steps.
NOTE: Steps 2 through 5 must be carried out within a 10-second period.
1. Start with the ignition switch off and the headlamp switch in the AUTOLAMPS ON position.
2. Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
3. Place the ignition switch in the RUN position.
4. Place the ignition switch in the OFF position.
5. Place the headlamp switch in the AUTOLAMPS ON position. The exterior lamps turn on at this point.
6. Wait the desired amount of time and place the headlamp switch in the OFF position (maximum of 3 minutes). The exterior lamps turn off and the autolamp time delay is now set.
I'm thinking he is referring to a premium, not a base. When I say "base premium" I'm talking about the model that is not the MCA or pony package. I believe Gizmo has the same version I have.
I just did this mod and wanted to pass on how to do it. For the 2011 base V6 model (and probably all others) all you need is a 7mm nut driver and the SW6659 part from Motorcraft.
1. Locate the two 7mm hex nuts on the plastic panel under the steering column and remove both.
2. Carefully remove the plastic panel the nuts from step 1 were securing.
3. After the panel is removed locate the one 7mm hex nut to the left of the steering column that is securing the message center button and light switch housing. Remove the single 7mm nut and carefully remove the housing.
4. Unplug the wiring harness from the back of the light switch and locate the three tabs that secure the light switch in the housing. Push each tab in and remove the headlight switch.
5. Installation of the SW6659 is the reverse of removal of the stock part. Enjoy :bigthumbsup

I just installed mine an hour ago and it didn't require any tools. The panel around the switch pops out. All you need to do is apply slight pressure to all corners and it will come out. Unplug the wire harness, remove switch via tabs and pop new one in. That easy...
i know this is an older thread but I figured I'd pass on that this part can also be ordered off amazon and it does in fact install without any screws and takes less than 5 minutes
I took this advice, ordered the part off amazon for $24.31 and just installed it on my '14 base V6 in less than 5 minutes and it works fine. There is a youtube video that shows you how (I am not too mechanically inclined). 2013 Ford Mustang Auto Headlight Switch Install - YouTube
Thanks fellows. I'd have never have thought of it without this forum.
I take it back. It's not working "perfectly". When I start the car, the odometer readings are visible but within a few seconds it disappears. The auto/lights are working and when I hit the info button and go thru the options all the other readings appear, including the trip A and trip B but no odometer. Is there something I have to reset? Anyone else have this problem?
Mine's been installed for three years, and it has always worked as intended. Maybe a faulty part?
