axle backs cat backs brands... what's the difference?

Looking at upgrading to new mufflers from factory. What exacly is the differance between axle backs and cat backs. I've been looking at borla s-type. Viewing you tube vids with this choice sonds best to me. However, what's the real advantage of an axle back? Do they realy add horse power? Can you recommend a brand? Not looking for loud but not quiet put put factory either. Thanks

Have Borla ATAK on my wife's Mustang and it is great. Don't know if Mustangs gain power from axle-backs though. Usually Cat-backs will widen the pipes to 2.5 inches from the stock 2.25 inches, a little bit higher flow.

Wife = 2012 Mustang V6 Premium Grabber Blue BBK CAI, BBK LT w/ HFC, Borla ATAK, MPT Tune, DSS Driveshaft, 3.73 FRPP Gears, BMR LCA's | Best = 13.5 @ 105
Husband = 2010 Camaro V6 Synergy Green Edition IPF Supercharger Best = 12.5 @ 111
Closest finish @ the line = Wife by 0.0028 seconds (4.79 inches)

Also own a 2014 Mustang GT Premium, Brembo Package, 401A, Comfort Package, Shaker Pro System, Pedestal Spoiler

Axle backs don't really have any gains at all its just more for the sound and appearance, cat backs give gains through the bigger piping and mandrel bent tubing which improves air flow which gives you more power. I have done both axle backs and cat backs and haven't noticed a big difference with either. If you have the money get the cat back it does add power even if you cant feel it completely.

As stated above. Axle backs aren't going to give much, if any performance gains. Axle back exhaust bolts up immediately behind the rear axle. Cat back exhaust will provide more performance gains than axle backs, but still nothing extreme. If you want to improve performance significantly through exhaust mods you'll need to replace the entire exhaust starting at the headers (where the exhaust leaves the engine block). Look into long/short tube headers, a new mid pipe either with or without cats (without for the most performance, but at a cost if your state requires emissions testing), then cat back systems. Use the search function for forums that discuss the various options at each stage of the exhaust to find what you like best.

This site is awsome... quick and through responces. Thank you so much guys for helping this newb out. Much appreciated.

After taking konas advice and reading on this site. I don't think I'm ready to go catback yet. Im going to try axleback. Just not sure between roush and borla. I like tue sound of the borla s-type but at a cost of over $700 I could get roush w/square exhaust tips and a new back facia pannel to go allong with the kit for about the same. Roush round tip is pricing at under $500 but seems a little louder for my taste. Whats the best online dealer for best price on axlebacks?

Most popular dealer is probably American muscle. Also late model restoration or cj pony parts. You may also want to look into dynomax. Do your research and search any axle back set up you want on this site and you will likely find countless opinions and videos to help

You may also want to look at the classifieds section on here or check eBay. Lots of gently used and even unopened parts that can be had for much less than retail

Best value is going to be the dynomax catback. These 600 dollar "axle back" kits are overpriced mufflers with a foot of pipe attached to them.

That's because they are a specialty muffler when you buy an axle-back, not a universal muffler.

To the others... you can get power gains if your oem mufflers are restrictive compared to what you are replacing them with.
