I did check the output surface on the crank, and it was perfect both to visual and manual inspection.
The leaks came from the inner ring, and the seal was pushed up tight into the recess. No signs of being even the slightest bit cockeyed.
I looked on as many forums as I could find before I did the job, and didn't find anyone with a leak problem after installing a new seal.
Not looking forward to taking the whole car apart again...damn!
