I did my first clutch change ever this summer. It was on my 04 V6, and I did have a little slack once I got the cable back on. I did the lift and press adjustment, and It worked great. With the amount of slack you described in your other post you could have the TOB reversed. If you do you will have more than engagement problems if the engine is running. The spinning part needs to be against the clutch fingers the other side doesn't spin. The other things I would suspect would be a bad clutch fork or worn fork pivot ball on the bell housing. I'm also wondering if you didn't get the fork on the pivot ball properly,
