if you want a rougher surface with plasti-dip you spray light even coats from a distance greater than 6" or so. If you want a smoother more rubbery look, then get close and lay it on thick. Be careful about runs and drips, but it seems harder to get runs and drips with plasti-dip compared to just regular paint.
