Your "answer" is only partially correct. If you change to "Sport Mode," on the auto transmission, and ht the OK button on the steering wheel, the "current gear" will not show on the dashboard display. It will only be displayed if you first make a manual shift with the "shift button" on the side of the gearshift handle. If you allow the transmission to continue in "automatic mode - even if on Sport setting-," the current gear is not displayed.
Deysha's answer seems entirely accurate to me. The transmission has 3 modes - Drive, Sport, and Selectshift. Only Selectshift displays what gear you are in.
Selectshift is activated by first putting the transmission from Drive into Sport mode with the gear shift lever, then pressing the toggle buttons on the gear shift knob to manually "select shift" your gear.
I know, we are talking semantics and I'm being picky. But, before I'd driven one, I was a little confused by this. Hope this helps out my fellow noobs.
