Last night my better half and I stopped at Home Depot and parked in a great lighted spot. The lights they use are kind of orange looking. When we came out we could not believe that my stang was black as coal.
If memory serves, it's sodium vapor lighting that does that. The bulbs are electrically efficient for applications like parking lot lighting, but they have very poor color rendering. I once owned a red Honda CR-X that under such lighting looked like it was a pinkish orange.
