Fragile Cowls!!!

My OEM windshield cowl is as brittle as eggshells...can't touch it cause it just keeps breaking worse. I found my noise which I thought was in the dash area. I just bought this replacement
99 04 FORD MUSTANG FIBER GLASS WIPER COWL UV - eBay (item 140529347095 end time Apr-05-11 12:35:31 PDT)
on eBay ...much better than the $350 that thae dealer wants. Any of you using this and how well did it fit?

I bought a new one from Ford about 2 years ago for 150 bucks. Not sure i would install a fiberglass one since it's mostly likely fragile too.

The reason I went the fiberglass route is because the Ford parts dealer says it's just a matter of time before a brand new one will break!! He quoted me $350!!???

I've seen one of the carbon fiber ones from the same guy, and it looked really good (for carbon fiber). I would assume he uses the same mold for the fiberglass ones, so it should be nice.

This is on my list to buy as well, because mine is the same way.

I'll let you all know how it looks anf fits as soon as I get it...just bought it today. The OEMs are made with ABS??? I always thought it would be alot tougher than it is. Right now an eggshell is tougher than that crap that's on my car. You'd think Ford would have recalled that or even a TSB! I checked the local junkyards and out of 12 Mustangs available, 12 cowls were cracked or broke.

That's a load of crap he told you. Even my 95GT mustang had the orignal cowl even when i sold it in 2004 and i bet it still has the original. Same for my 97 that i sold in 2005. The only reason i got a new one for the Cobra is it had a small chip on the edge and i'm anal about things. I paid 150 from Ford, maybe the price has gone up. Fiberglass is not that strong and flexible to a point. Just be gentle when installing it and you have to flex it a tad to make it fit.
I would buy a used one off ebay before i bought a fiberglass one. that's just me though.

Tons of stuff on cars are abs plastic. What do you think your front and rear bumpers are? Hopefully the fiberglass one lasts longer.

Well, the way I look at it, you can buy 3 of the fiberglass ones before you pay for one factory one nowadays anyways. It's gel-coated, so it should last a long time (same coating used on fiberglass boats).

Mine cracked when I took it off to install the STB, and then disintegrated when I removed it to remove the STB. It did last 9 years without cracking though.

I was thinking about buying the CF one, and having it painted to match the car. What do you think?

I was thinking about color matching it also. I'll see how it looks when I get it.

On my '01 the cowl cracked. I never did get around to get one of the CF ones.
Let us know how it is. I have some friends with 99-04 GTs that need to know.
