4R70W: Why is it they always want to sell you a shift kit?

In SouthEast Los Angeles, for every transmission shop I have gone to for a rebuild quote(9 different shops), they insist on a shift kit. I do not want a shift kit. I ask if they've heard of a "J-MOD" on the valve bodies and no one knows what that is! Some of them won't rebuild it without the shift kit. Why is that?

'98 GT Convertible Pony, Pacific Green/Saddle DD, 4R70W, PI Swap, Ford Racing heads, Ford Racing 3.73 gears, Ford Racing red wireset, SCT tuner, MSD Blaster coil packs, K&N Custom Ram Air, Steeda pulleys, Super 44 Flows, NGK Iridiums, Royal Purple, Stage 8 header bolts, Kenwood KDC-X792, Mach 460 speakers, Snap-On tools made it happen, No need to go over 300HP... Awaiting J-Mod, Mild Cam, Accufab TB & Plenum, H&R lowering sport springs, Tokico dampers. Possibly LT's or X Pipe.

next time print out the J-mod writeup, IMO the jmod is safer and better than a shiftkit, even if they do the same thing, as with everything in this world this is just a way to make more money, as money runs the world.

They want to sell you a shift kit because it's practically free for them to do. Takes no extra parts they don't have lying around and they can charge you a couple benjamins for it

Just an old ford...

The "J-MOD write up" has been printed out and read over about 20 times. I have confidence to do the modification but I was hoping to buy some time and have them do it since the transmission was out. I still haven't taken my car to the shop. Oh well, I guess their benchwork on the 4R70W won't include the J-MOD! It will be left in my hands to finish the job!
