The effects of E85 on your valvetrain...

Here's some pics of engine i had to tear down on friday, due to the effect of E85 on valvetrain. The problem started when i couldn't control crankcase pressure. I decided to check the recession of the valveseats, through measuring valvestem heights. I found 2 intake valve seats that had recessed over 0.400", and a couple exhaust seats the same way. E85 lacks lubrication (similar to the affect of sulfur in diesel fuel). It allows the ability for the valve to pound the seats repeatedly.

The pictures are of a LSx motor, with what converts to ~40k miles

I'll try to get pics of the valve seats, but for now:

Ok... I gotta ask.... why E85 in a mustang? I dont know of any certified E85 conversion kits or was that someones woopsie at the gas pump?
I agree it dosnt have the lubricants of gas... as i've seen first hand the 10% mixture they force on us in NY and what it does to the gas lines and any other rubber it touches

This wasn't someones engine in a car... this is a prototype engine (LSx GM motor).

In order to run E85, you must have stainless fuel lines, the same setup needed to run alchohol.

It's more like 17% these days.

Wow, 0.400" recession? Are you sure you didn't mean 0.040" recession. Either way that's a lot. I hope my "Flex Fuel E85 ready" Explorer motor holds up better than that LSx motor did.

nope, i stated that # correctly :eyepoppin

The heads were trashed when i pulled them off, no repair could be had on them.

E85 does this to all engines, most of ours can withstand ~100k miles worth of abuse, but they all will do that. This engine had E85 specific valvetrain in it too.
