Underdrive pullies question

I bought a set of under drive pullies from brothers performance and just got them installed today. I had a buddy of mine, who is a mechanic put them on. After I picked up the vehicle I looked under the hood and noticed that he didn't piggy back the harmonic balancer, it was just the under drive pulley on the crank. The car drove great, I didn't notice any vibration. Is this normal for a piggy back design pulley kit? I called my buddy and he said that it didn't need the piggy back. I know for a fact that I didn't buy the sfi approved kit. The one I picked up was 69 bucks. Can anyone shed some light as to whether I really need to piggy back the harmonic balancer or not?


1998 GT- 5 speed. Crystal White. C&L CAI, 80mm MAF, TrickFlow 75mm throttle body, TrickFlow Upper intake plenum, Underdrive pullies, BBK catted X-pipe, 4.10 gears, limited slip diff with carbon fiber discs, moser 31 spline axles. MM FLSFCs, Screaming demon coil packs, Ford Racing 9mm wires, SR lowering springs, 95 cobra R rims, black, machined lip 18X9's in front, 18X10's in rear, Bullitt style pedals, SVE race seats.

Yep should have piggy backed with the stock balancer. Should have gotten the Steedas

I guess what I'm asking is, if I leave it as is, will this damage the engine?

Well I would think so yes. You technically do not have a harmonic balancer on it at the moment. The crank and bearings won't last long without a harmonic balancer.

Your engine needs a harmonic balancer. Find the stock one and have it installed asap - it may not be immediately detrimental to your engine without it but this is definitely not a part I would go without and definitely not rev the crap out of the engine in it's absence.

Thanks guys, I thought it was a little weird. I took it back to the shop after I called and let him know that it was a piggy back and needed the balancer. Its all good now!
