96 Cobra Stuck in Gear

My friend isn't a member yet, so I told him I would ask, Car got stuck in reverse usually he would just bump the clutch a little and it would pop out. this time it didn't work so he hit the shifter with his hand. and of course the shifter moved but car is still stuck in gear. when you let out on clutch the motor dies... but the car attempts to rock forward like its stuck in 5th gear. he pulled the shifter and its all intact. What would have broken, the shift fork? What can be done to get it back in neutral? and if it can be brought back to neutral can the trans work 1-4th and reverse? or is it just broke? He has a little money saved up and we have a lift available to us. what are the options?

Yes. I'm afraid so.

Interesting question. I don't know. I have always considered a "game over" type failure. Pull the transmission. Sorry.
