Flywheel not moving

Hey guys I just finished changing the transmission in my 96 mustang gt and the flywheel wont turn. I tightened all the bolts on the transmission bell housing and went to put the flywheel nuts back on and when I went to turn it after putting the first nut on it wouldn't turn.
Does anyone have any idea why it wouldn't turn I have done everything correctly and this is not my first time putting a a transmission?

Were you changing the flywheel and clutch? Typically you would bolt the flywheel up before installing the clutch or the bell housing... Could you give us a little more information?

+1 on above. Should we assume that the original flywheel, flywheel bolts and clutch were used?

Had this happen to me. Doing a timing chain replacement on a 4.6. Went to turn the motor over with a socket on the front crank and found the motor was "locked up". Could turn the motor only a small amount forward and back before it was locked up solid.

What the F! I did the job right. How could I mess up a perfectly good motor?

Stood there for quite some time before realizing that for some reason I had put the transmission in gear.

Have you double checked that the transmission itself isn't in gear?

If the flywheel won't turn after installing the flywheel, think flywheel bolts too long.

As far as other "possible" causes. How about:
  • friction plate in backwards.
  • throw out bearing in front of release fork
  • as mentioned already, transmission locked up or not in neutral.

He said he was putting nuts on the flywheel, I would venture a guess that he has an automatic transmission. If that’s the case, you need to pull the trans back out because the torque converter is bound up. Did you make sure the torque converter was seated all the way in the trans? You should be able to pass a straight edge across the face of the bell housing and the torque converter studs should not touch the straight edge.

+1 on above especially if this is really an automatic transmission. I was trying to figure out what the OP was trying to say. That does make more sense this being a flexplate/torque converter.

The other thing to check (while we are checking) is to be certain that a pilot bearing wasn't left inside the motor.

If the torque converter wasn't seated all the way in (easy to do!) it will put everything in a bind, and put tremendous pressure on the bellhousing, pump, and converter. And prevent turning too.
