What tire size would benefit me the best on stock rims?

I wanted to go with 275/40/17's all the way around, but a buddy of mine was telling me I should only get them in the back and keep the stock size up front (245/45/17). He said my car will handle better that way. Is there really that much of a difference? I wanna be able to rotate my tires. But I know I can't with the different sizes without dismounting the tires.

What do you think guys?I'm Looking for someone that has some experience in this area.

Thanks...

Well depends on how wide your rim is Mana, i got an 8 " wide rim and i run 275's all around no problem plus my car is lowered 1.5. I think i heard people say that running a wider tire on a rim that it can't handle will hurt peroformance, correct me if im wrong.....

275's really need a 9" rim minimum. If you put a tire on a rim that is too small (re 315's on 9" rims which a lot of people do) you get sidewall deflection. This will hinder your cornering ability and in actuality, give you a smaller contact patch than the same tire on an appropriately sized rim. You won't be utilizing the entire tire and in a worst case can have issues with the tire/rim separating in an extreme situation.

The other issue that some have experienced with 275's up front is excessive wander - where the tire will catch a groove in the road and not track straight. It is more common with larger front tires (and old bias tires).

A good rule of thumb is you reall don't want to exceed 1.5" in section width over rim width. A 275 should be right around 10.5" (allowing for manufacturing variances since 275 is 10 1/2 and 2 extra mm). Putting that on an 8" rim is 2.5" in excess or 1.25 on each side of the rim. 315's are like 12.3" wide - and when put on a 9" rim is 3.3"....that's 1.65" on each side....not enough people think about that....it really comes down to safety....

keep the stock size tires on your stang. 255 the biggest on a 17x 8 , and 275 biggest on 17x9. and like snkypete said, dont put anything larger than a 255 up front, i have 255 up front and i still sometimes track off...i'd personally recomend 245 up front, 275 out back on a 9 inch wide rim.

Thanks for the info guys... I'll prolly just get the 245/45/17 all the way around then... I can't afford new rims at the moment. I believe the stock rims are 17x8... I just wanted the side wall to cover the rim a lil bit in case I happen to rub the curb... But I guess that would be a bad move. I'm not all that great at suspention (sp) and tire stuff... That's why I asked.

That's another thing... I wanna keep the rims I have. I'll prolly just stay with the stock tire size. Any suggestions on a decent tire? I want something that's gonna last a while and handle decent. Any suggestions?

Go with Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions, 245/47/17 ($190 @ Tirerack) ... incredible tires!! Had them on my BMW 330i, can ride as hard as you want and tire wear, handling, and highway ride all incredible. Will get on my 03 Mustang when I've got my other mods finished. Can't go wrong, the tire BMW suggests all owners should change their stock tires (Continentals) over to...

My $.02....

I just purchased the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP and they track great on the street and in the rain with no problems at all. Terrible if you want to run at the track with them. I lost almost .8 in the 1/8th using them so drag radials are now in the works. They were $163 each thru www.tirerack.com

I've also heard the Kumho Ecsta MX are good also. they run $125 each thru tirerack.

Check out tirerack, they have each tire actually rated with customer comments about each tire too.

I love the shape and style of the bullitt rims. I just want them bigger and chromed. I found a set of 17x10s in the American Racing classics ( or something like that ) series. I'm not sure how much they run, but they're the exact same shape, just chrome. THen I think I'm gonna throw some 295's on the rear end.

I intend on going with the BFGoodrich Comp T/A Drag Radials 275/40, 17's. I am going to put them on a set of 01 rims and use them for drag racing ONLY. Is any one else using this method and is the grip good.
