2001 Bullitt. 44 cents to fix the goofy hanging idle.....

I finally went out and fixed my hanging idle. A common complaint for 4.6 owners. You know how it takes so long for your car to drop back down to idle? Honestly, it's a 44 cent fix and about 5 minutes of your time.

I went to Lowes and in the plumbing section, picked up a 1/2" brass pipe cap. Came back to the house and drilled a 3/16" hole in it, and installed it in the input line that comes into the IAC from my CAI. I had to cut a little length off the cap so that the hose would slide all the way back on, that took about 30 seconds on the bandsaw, but if you don't have a bandsaw, you could do it in 2 minutes with a hacksaw, brass is so soft.

so it sounds like an orifice to limit the air flow into the IAC- is this to say the IAC does not close fast enough and makes the idle hang - or another reason?

It's programmed into the computer to burn off excess fuel. It's an emissions thing that is actually programmed in, so there's nothing wrong with cars that do it, it's just annoying.

Well, I may have to play with the hole size a little. 3/16" worked great last night, but the car was stilll warm. This morning, it's cold as crap, and the car won't idle with it in, took it out, and it idles fine. Once it warms up, it does fine with the block-off in there.

I'm going to make the hole a little larger, and try again.

If you go onto ebay they sell a gasket ment just for that. it goes between the iac and throttle body. just thought you might check it out.

If I wanted the gasket, I'd make one for 1/50th the price of the one they sell on ebay. Just looking at other options.

I haven't had any time to work on this. Probably won't until this weekend.

Well I just found a peice of brass pipe at the shop. Measures about .600 so ill turn it down a little and drill a tad bigger hole than yours, Bullit. And I'll let you know what comes of it.

19/64" worked well for me i tried a couple of different ones but this one had the least adverse effects for me

the other reason the idle hangs is to keep power to the brakes.
the only downside i found to doing this is if the A/C is on your idle will be erratic i just use a .5" copper water pipe end cap.

Just a note: a .500" peice of brass is to small! Haha I made it work though, and I think the 19/64 hole is too big. Didn't have any effect on my idle.

Yeah spending 44 cents is cool. But, geting paid to make it is even better =]. So I made ii today with a 3/16" hole and it worked great. Started up when it was cold and idled fine! Sounds so much better when shifting. And it gets rid of the jerk when engine braking! Ill post up some pics soon. Maybe it is different for you Bullit because, well you have a bullit. HAHA
